Hulu Developing Series Based On Douglas Adams’ ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy’

It’s being reported that Hulu is developing an original series adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, author Douglas Adams‘ classic sci-fi work and the novels that followed it.

The story follows an Englishman named Arthur Dent who finds himself going on adventures in space after aliens destroy Earth to make room for a galactic freeway. It actually began as a BBC radio comedy in 1978 before the first novel was published in 1979. It’s been adapted numerous times, including the 2005 movie starring Martin Freeman, Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, Sam Rockwell, Bill Nighy, John Malkovich, Stephen Fry, and the late great Alan Rickman.

Here’s a description of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy from Amazon:

Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox””the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

The potential series comes from Carlton Cuse and Jason Fuchs, who are said to be fans of the source material. They will write and executive produce the series, and handle showrunner duties.

Cuse was co-showrunner on the hit series LOST with Damon Lindelof (who has his own series based on a beloved title on the way), and his other credits include Bates Motel, The Strain, San Andreas, Colony, Rampage, and the upcoming Locke & Key among others.

Fuchs’ writing credits include Wonder Woman, Pan, and Ice Age: Continental Drift. He’s also an actor, with roles in the upcoming IT: Chapter Two and more. He’ll be penning the script for the pilot episode.

No word on when we might see Hulu’s adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, as it is still in the early stages of development.
