Is Tommy Doyle Returning To The ‘Halloween’ Franchise? Rumor Is That Paul Rudd Was Approached For Role

While the holiday is celebrated in mid Fall, the summer has been hot with Halloween movie news. We learned earlier this month that “The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode will continue” with two sequels to David Gordon Green’s hugely successful 2018 Halloween. Halloween Kills is set to hit theaters in 2020 and be followed by 2021’s Halloween Ends. Jamie Lee Curtis is set to return as Laurie Strode in both films. Now rumors are circulating that another character from John Carpenter’s original 1978 classic could be returning to the series: Tommy Doyle.

Jeff Sneider of The Sneider Cut podcast and Variety’s Justin Kroll both reported hearing that Green wants the character back for Halloween Kills. Originally played by child actor Brian Andrews, who fans will remember for his ear-piercing shrieks of terror upon seeing “The Boogeyman” outside his Haddonfield home. Although I guess we can thank him, since without him Laurie Strode would have had time to engage in sexual exploits like her soon-to-be-murdered friends Linda and Annie. The character is probably best known to Halloween franchise fans for Paul “Antman” Rudd’s theatrical debut in 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Paul Rudd joined the list of Hollywood elite who broke their big-screen virginity in horror films, not unlike Jamie Lee Curtis herself, and a list of others such as Johnny Depp (A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984) and Kevin Bacon (Friday the 13th, 1980).

Rudd’s performance was something to behold: stammering and swaying with a tinge of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor ticks. While his entry, the sixth in the franchise at the time, was deeply maligned by audiences and critics alike, it’s become something of a cult classic due to a hard-to-find “Producer’s Cut” as well as it featuring the final performance of acclaimed actor and beloved Halloween star Donald Pleasance.

While rumors claim that Rudd, who’s since hit it big in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was offered the role in the new film, the same ones add that he had to turn it down on account of filming on the new Ghostbusters movie. With 2018’s Halloween retconning the entire franchise and eliminating every sequel to Carpenter’s original, it would be interesting to see what direction Green and his writing crew go with for the character and who they end up casting. Playing with the math, Tommy in 78 was about 10 years old, which makes him 50 (!) now”¦ damn, Paul Rudd would be perfect.

Halloween Kills will hit theaters in October 2020, with Halloween Ends a year later. The OG Michael Myers, Nick Castle, already reported he will feature in both films.
