Andy Serkis Says He “Can’t Wait” To Direct ‘Venom 2’
  |  @   |

Venom may have been one of the strangest and most widely panned of Spider-Man-Less spinoffs, but it was such a huge success that Sony plans to follow it up with a sequel, plus additional spinoffs. However, with Venom director Ruben Fleischer unable to commit to directing the sequel because of his responsibilities helming Zombieland: Double Tap, the studio had to find a replacement for Venom 2 and it looks like Venom 2 has got its sticky hands on one — Andy Serkis to be precise.

According to new reports, Serkis will be directing the sequel.

THR was the first to confirm the news, which comes after Venom star Tom Hardy accidentally leaked an image of Serkis on his social media accounts. Of course, that image was quickly taken down, but it drew the attention and speculation of many journalists and fans of the film.

Serkis would confirm the news on his own Instagram account with a caption that reads:

It’s actually happening. I can feel it, the Symbiote has found a host in me, and I’m ready for the ride…Can’t wait! Are you ready @tomhardy ?

Here’s the Instagram post:

According to THR, Serkis met with Sony on the week of July 22. This was after it was reported that he was one of a handful of directors under consideration for the job. This would be Serkis’ third directorial effort following Breathe and Netflix’s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, “which ended up on Netflix after being made at Warner Bros.”

Serkis is well-known for his motion-capture work as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings trilogies — he also served as second unit director in The Hobbit movies — and as Caesar in the new Planet Of The Apes trilogy. His motion-capture work is so well-received by audiences and critics alike, some proposed that there would be an Oscar category that recognizes motion-capture work. Of course, we all know how that went down.

Kelly Marcel, who wrote the screeplay for Venom, will write the script for Venom 2. Hardy is set to return to play as Eddie Brock, and presumably, Woody Harrelson will be back as Cletus Kasady, the homicidal maniac who bonds with a spawn of the Venom symbiote and calls himself Carnage.

Venom 2 is tentatively scheduled for an October 2, 2020 release.
