‘Game Of Thrones’ Creators Sign $200 Million Deal With Netflix

SDCC 2013: Game of Thrones panel: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

With Game of Thrones coming to an end, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were in very high demand with studios, networks, and other services ranging from Amazon, Apple TV, Disney, Netflix, Warner Brothers, and others looking to work with highly qualified showrunners like Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, and Kenya Barris.

Now the pair has signed a $200 million dollar deal with Netflix. More on the report below.

The Hollywood Report says that now that the two are officially done working over at HBO, they will be taking their services to Netflix, where they will develop new projects for the streaming service.

Apparently, the two were in discussions with Disney (along with their newly acquired FX arm), and Amazon before they decided to sign with Netflix.

But just because they did not sign with Disney does not mean it will be the last time we will see them working together. Both Benioff and Weiss are working on, as THR puts it, “a Star Wars trilogy.” We’ve known they were working on Star Wars movies for a while now, but this is the first time that we’ve heard it’s a trilogy. Since there is such little information on it, we cannot expand any further. We’ll just have to wait for additional information as it comes in.

It is also unclear if this trilogy will come before or after Rian Johnson’s trilogy. We know that the first Star Wars film from Benioff and Weiss will hit theaters on December 16, 2022, with the following two dated for December 2024 and December 2026.

As for the $200 million dollar deal, it comes after the $150 million deal that Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan signed with Amazon in April. Disney had made a deal with the two that would have allowed them to work at FX Productions, which would have gone alongside a film pact with the company.

Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement:

“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same ’80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in his own statement:

“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

And while the two will no longer be working at HBO, they will still be credited as executive producers for any Game of Thrones spinoffs, which also includes the prequel series that is currently in development.

It should be interesting to see what sort of series Benioff and Weiss can come up with, and if it can have the same or even exceed the following that Game of Thrones had. I mean, they would have to give Netflix subscribers something pretty spectacular if the streaming giant was willing to give the two $200 million.
