Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are very adept at being able to give us entertaining material in all mediums from live-action to animation and even television. They are even more well-known for taking risks on projects that many deem to be failures. However, time and again, they have proven the skeptics wrong. As such, they have shown that they can give us hits by directing films like The LEGO Movie and Jump Street films. And of course, the two were also producers on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won them their first Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

That leads us to our next report. While at the Television Critics Association 2019, they spoke about some upcoming TV series based on Marvel characters which Sony currently controls. More on the report below.

Deadline says that Lord and Miller will be developing multiple live-action series based on Sony’s Marvel characters, which includes “like 900 characters.”

This is probably a similar approach to what Sony Pictures is doing with their live-action Spider-Man-less universe. They first launched their series of films with Venom starring Tom Hardy. The spinoff recently landed Andy Serkis to direct its sequel. Then there is the Morbius film starring Jared Leto.

But there’s also an animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse TV series. Miller said they had been looking at various ways that they could make the show “really special” and when it could possibly air. Here’s what he had to say:

“We’ve been talking to a lot of potential teammates for trying to do something not like anything else that’s been done on television. It’ll be a little while before it all comes together and is on the air, but I think it is going to be something really special. Hopefully, we’ll know in the next few months where it’ll be and what the schedule will be.”

One thing that Miller could not confirm is whether or not the show will pull from the Spider-Man canon. Additionally, it does not have a home as of yet, which means it would possibly end up somewhere like Netflix.

The deal between Lord and Miller and Sony, which is said to be in the nine-figure range, will allow them to both develop their own projects for network, cable, and streaming, and also help with projects being worked on by other writers.

We will keep you up to date as soon as there are more developments.
