Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is keeping himself quite busy as of late. Not only is he working behind the camera, but he also appears in a few starring roles. This year, he’s got Jojo Rabbit, a historical satire that sees him playing Adolf Hitler. And it was assumed that he would get right into Thor: Love and Thunder after that. But that isn’t the case.
New reports say that he’ll be directing another title just before he dives back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And other reports say that this project is sports-related. More on all of this below.
Variety was the first to report that Waititi would be writing and directing a new project for Fox Searchlight. Given that it would be under Fox’s indie studio, it is safe to say that it won’t be a big-budget project. This will be the second time that Waititi has teamed up with Fox Searchlight after Jojo Rabbit, which will hit theaters later this October.
Fox Searchlight is setting up Jojo Rabbit for an awards run by giving it an awards season release. Additionally, the film will open at various film festivals before it officially opens in theaters later this year.
/Film provided additional reporting that says the film will be called Next Goal Wins, an adaptation of the 2014 British documentary film directed by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. The film chronicles the national football team of American Samoa as they try to recover from the indignity of being known as one of the weakest football teams in the world, and to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Garrett Basch will produce through the Fox Searchlight banner, while Jonathan Cavendish and Andy Serkis will produce through their Imaginarium banner.
The news comes after Waititi recently signed on to write and direct Thor: Love and Thunder, a signing that forced Warner Bros. to postpone their live-action adaptation of Akira.
Jojo Rabbit hits theaters October 18, 2019, with Thor: Love And Thunder hitting theaters on November 5, 2021. Which means we can expect to see Next Goal Wins sometime in mid to late 2020.
