A modern take on an Arthurian legend? Abso-freaking-lutely! I grew up reading everything I could about Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Many authors, many tales, but the message always bled through as being simultaneously heroic and tragic.

But what if things were not always so cut and dry? What then? Perhaps Once & Future #1 will be a pleasant change from the norm.

A summer drought throughout Britain leads to a remarkable discovery by an archaeologist. Unfortunately for him and the rest of the world, he was not the only one to realize the uniqueness of this long lost artifact. This unearthing brings danger to not only this excavator but perhaps to any and all who seek it.

This momentous occasion also mobilizes one who has reason to fear the item’s return. Our heroine, Bridgette, is a warrior of the past and, apparently, is also to be one for the present. And for someone who was living in a retirement home, she is awfully spry and resourceful. I must also add that she is definitely one person with whom it is best not to trifle. Her grandson, on the other hand, is not frightening anyone.

Knowing what she must do, the fearless Bridgette makes her way to a place she has long kept ready. During this, she brings grandson Duncan up to speed. He is incredulous but events quickly convince him that she might just be telling the truth. But what if the old stories were only a partial truth? What if things are about to go from bad to worse? The future is hidden but they must be prepared.

I love everything about this comic. So much is unique and quietly unveiling itself, not unusual for something written by Kieron Gillen. In fact, I expect things to get far more twisted before unraveling.

This is the premiere issue, so there is no time like the present to get on board with what is sure to be a fun and eventful series. History buffs will probably flock to this, I know I am giddy as can be! Enjoy!

When a group of Nationalists use an ancient artifact to bring a villain from Arthurian myth back from the dead to gain power, ex-monster hunter Bridgette McGuire escapes her retirement home and pulls her unsuspecting grandson Duncan, a museum curator, into a world of magic and mysticism to defeat a legendary threat. * Bestselling writer Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Star Wars) and Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Klaus) explore the mysteries of the past, the complicated truths of our history and the power of family to save the day – especially if that family has secret bunkers of ancient weapons and decades of experience hunting the greatest monsters in Britain’s history!
