Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame marks the end of an 11-year long-form story arc and the continuation of a great comic book movie legacy. These films hold great meaning to those who have been with the franchise since 2008. So to see it all come to a fitting conclusion was a bit sad. That being said, we all know things are never meant to last forever and directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo were able to give Marvel fans the perfect capper by giving these characters we all know and love a satisfying send-off.
Now with Avengers: Endgame on 4K, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital we can keep those memories alive and watch how it all evolved starting with a billionaire playboy philanthropist. Check out my review below.
First the film review. In my original review, I said the film was “filled with a wide range of emotions from joy, sorrow, laughter, and excitement,” and “will surely go down as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time.” And that still holds true today, especially now that it is the highest-grossing film of all time at the box office. We get to see the Avengers at their lowest point and experiencing a great degree of failure. They’ve all had to deal with the repercussions of the loss of life at some point during the first ten years of their heroship, but nothing on the magnitude that Thanos was able to deliver with the snap of his fingers.
Watching this in 4K, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed that the image quality doesn’t completely live up to the 4K standards. However, that in no way means the image quality as a whole is a massive disappointment. It’s still very clean and crisp to watch, but it is hard to get some of the details and nuances from some of the rich and vibrant colorful costumes from the ones that require some CGI, even more so with some of the more practical costumes.
As for some of the bonus features, they are more typical than anything that you need to watch. However, if there are any bonus features to look forward to, it’s the legacy that Stan Lee has left behind, and short hero featurettes centering on Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.
Other bonus features include “The Women of the MCU,” which is a great look at the growth and impact the female characters have had in the 11 years since the MCU started. However, it’s nothing when compared to the demand to have an all-female Avengers team up in a film.
Then there’s a look at Bro Thor, and the last dance between Steve and Peggy. Another sees the Russo brothers talk about the journey to Endgame.
Of course, there are the general goofs and gags along with the deleted scenes, none of which are really special and stand out. But the commentary is where it is at to get inside the heads of directors Anthony and Joe Russo, and screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus.
Honestly, despite some of the flaws, Avengers: Endgame is a worthy addition to the 4K shelf. The picture quality isn’t exactly the gold standard, but it is good enough as it’s clear and sharp with some minor blemishes and blurs around the smaller details. But because the film is so great, we can tend to overlook those flaws and still enjoy it for what it is, a really outstanding superhero film that will stand the test of time.
