Orion Pictures has released a teaser trailer for Gretel & Hansel, a new take on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel which was first published in 1812. The movie stars Sophia Lillis (IT Chapter Two, Sharp Objects) and Samuel Leakey (MotherFatherSon) as Gretel and Hansel, a young girl and her little brother who encounter a woman (Star Trek: First Contact and Carnival Row star Alice Krige) in the woods while in search of food and work.

The original Grimm fairy tale is already pretty dark, but as you’ll see in the trailer, this latest adaptation looks to take the story to even darker places, drawing inspiration from films like Robert Eggers’ 2016 hit The Witch.

Unfortunately we don’t have an official synopsis for the movie yet, just the brief description above and what we can gather from the trailer itself.

Directing the movie is Oz Perkins, who previously helmed The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. The screenplay was written by Rob Hayes (Chewing Gum).

Gretel & Hansel is scheduled to be released in theaters on January 31, 2020.
