After playing one of the greatest spies for the past decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hayley Atwell will now be a part of another spy blockbuster franchise. She will be joining Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson in Chris McQuarrie‘s next line of Mission: Impossible films. More on the report below.
McQuarrie took to his official Instagram account to post the news last weekend. His caption, simply read: “@wellhayley Should you choose to accept…,” and did not provide any sort of details about her character, her connection to the IMF, or if she is signed on for the two films that McQuarrie will direct. Here’s the post.
Atwell then responded with her own post of the same image, albeit at a more obscure angle. Here’s what she had to say: “@christophermcquarrie Mission: Accepted. Though I’m not the sort to follow orders…”
Now, judging by the fact that she said she isn’t one to follow orders, it could be that she is another rogue agent or someone who has been framed and is now forced to be on the run, much like Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust. Of course, that is all just speculation on my part.
It will be a while before anything is revealed considering that the films will be released Summer 2021 and Summer 2022.
As for Atwell, she is best known for her performance as Agent Peggy Carter, who has appeared in multiple Marvel Studios films since debuting in Captain America: The First Avenger and having her own television show on ABC. The character finally was reunited with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) at the end of Avengers: Endgame, bringing their story arc to a conclusion. She will reprise her role later on next year in Marvel Studios’ animated series What If…?. Other credits include this summer’s Blinded By The Light, as well as an episode of Netflix’s anthology series Black Mirror, and two live-action Disney films, Cinderella and Christopher Robin.
Mission: Impossible 7 opens in theaters July 23, 2021, while Mission: Impossible 8 opens a little over a year later on August 5, 2022.
