‘Midway’ Trailer: Just Another Bombastic Take On History

Watching this latest trailer for Roland Emmerich‘s Midway, one can’t help but feel that they’ve seen something like this before.
That’s because it bares a striking resemblance to Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor, using actual history to create a popcorn blockbuster that is full of action, explosions, and heroic music. Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the film, which you can check out below.
Not to be confused with the 1979 film of the same name starring Henry Fonda, Charlton Heston, and Toshirô Mifune, Emmerich’s Midway will have more of an action slant to it. The whole patriotic vibe to it is hard to avoid, but yeah, if Emmerich could bring that out in Independence Day, why not do it for this.
I am skeptical that there is more substance to this than the pilots shooting things out of the sky and making things go boom, but if it ends up working, then more power to Emmerich. And honestly, some part of me wants to see this. It by no means should be used in any history class, but it looks like the kind of film that is very easily digestible because it is just full of that action.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
MIDWAY centers on the Battle of Midway, a clash between the American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy which marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. The film, based on the real-life events of this heroic feat, tells the story of the leaders and soldiers who used their instincts, fortitude and bravery to overcome the odds.
The film stars Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano, Luke Kleintank, Jun Kunimura, Darren Criss, Keean Johnson, Alexander Ludwig, with Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, and Woody Harrelson.
Lionsgate will release Midway Veterans Day weekend on November 8, 2019.
