Legendary television writer Norman Lear recently renewed the overall deal he has with Sony. The deal is set to take Lear into his 100th year on this planet of ours.
Variety published a feature about the 97-year-old Lear, but it was just a small part of that feature that set the ol’ internet on fire today. In it there is a quote from Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra, who says that some “very famous people” have approached Sony with hopes of remaking the 1987 fairy tale classic The Princess Bride, which was executive produced by Lear. You can see what he had to say below.
In the feature, Vinciquerra said:
“We have so many people coming to us saying, “˜We want to remake this show or that show.’ Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo “˜The Princess Bride.’ Some people want to do animated versions of some of the sitcoms. Not a month goes by when we don’t have an idea coming from some very big name wanting to do things with Norman.”
Two things: first of all, a remake would be a horrible idea. That goes without saying, really. It was great when it was released in the ’80s, it’s still great today, and it will continue to be great until the end of time. Second, this isn’t a confirmation that a remake is in development. He’s just saying that some big name folks have inquired about the possibility. Hopefully Sony is smart enough to know a remake is completely unnecessary, and declines any and all offers.
One need only peek at social media to see proof that it’s a bad idea. This small, seemingly harmless quote in a lengthy feature on Norman Lear, and The Princess Bride becomes a trending topic because so many are so very against it.
For anyone who’s unfamiliar with The Princess Bride (the very idea!), the movie was an adaptation of the late great William Goldman‘s 1973 novel of the same name. Goldman himself adapted the story into screenplay form, and Rob Reiner directed it. Starring was Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, Peter Falk, Fred Savage, Carol Kane, and Billy Crystal.
