Yep, you read that correctly. Two forces residing within the Walt Disney Company entertainment juggernaut are about to collide.
It’s being reported that Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios who has overseen the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now developing a new Star Wars movie with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. In addition to developing the feature, Feige will also produce.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is part of Kennedy’s “new plans for a wave of projects” set in the Star Wars universe.
Feige is big fan, like so many others, and the report says that he talked about a potentially working on a Star Wars movie with Kennedy and Walt Disney Studios co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman at the end of the summer.
When THR asked for a comment on the report Horn offered a statement, saying:
“We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.”
Unfortunately, there are no details on the Star Wars project Feige is developing at the moment.
Whether this is the start of Feige stepping into a bigger role within Disney and working with its various assets, or just a one-time thing for now, remains to be seen.
With the aforementioned Skywalker saga set to come to a close later this year, Feige’s Star Wars project joins other future releases we don’t know a whole lot about yet, such as The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s new trilogy, and the movies being developed by Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.
