Does anyone remember the Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage story arc? Well, it looks like Venom 2 will be adding a major character from that comic. According to new reports, Shriek will be joining Carnage (Woody Harrelson) in the mayhem. More on the report below.
Deadline says that Sony wouldn’t confirm the addition of Shriek, Carnage’s partner in mass murder and love interest, citing that the sequel is still in the early days of production. However, they are currently looking at a cast of unknowns to play the part.
For those who are unfamiliar with the character, Shriek is a villainess who possesses supersonic powers, just like her moniker. It’s a pretty nice villain to add considering that sound is one of the symbiote’s weaknesses. Also, the dysfunctional relationship between herself and Carnage resembles that of Joker and Harley Quinn.
The original Venom, helmed by Ruben Fleischer, grossed over $856 million worldwide on a $100 million production budget, making it the surprise hit of last year. However, Fleischer stepped side from directing Venom 2 so that he could helm Zombieland: Double Tap. This led to the studio hiring Andy Serkis to direct the upcoming sequel.
Tom Hardy will return to play Ed Brock, a former washed-up journalist who lets the black-gooey symbiote live inside of him. However, in the comics, Venom creates a spawn that bonds with Cletus Kasaday, thus creating the red hot-blooded Carnage.
Originally a drug dealer, Frances Barrison becomes Shriek after a traumatic experience leads to dormant mutant powers awakening in her. She often can be seen with Carnage and played a major role in the Maximum Carnage story arc, where she participated in a large killing spree with the insane symbiote along with a few blood-thirsty killers.
Of course, we don’t know much about the sequel itself. But it is starting to look like Venom will have his hands full trying to fight one of his greatest nemeses and a villainess who can throw sound projectiles.
Venom 2 opens in theaters on October 2, 2020.
