‘Marriage Story’ Trailer: Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson Watch Their Marriage Fall Apart
  |  @   |

Nothing says bleak comedy like watching a marriage fall apart. And that is what we will get to see in Noah Baumbach‘s Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as a husband and wife pair that looks back on their past as they are going through a divorce. The film has already made the festival rounds at the Toronto Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival, where it was met with unanimous praise. And now it will be heading to limited theaters before making its wide debut on Netflix.

But before all of that can happen, the streaming service has released a new trailer that gets deeper into the characters’ story, what they stand to lose, how they are coping, and so much more. Check out the trailer below.

The film has already been praised as one of Baumbach’s best work, with much of that praise going to the two lead actors. The trailer and plot synopsis reveal how the two have grown distant from each other, both figuratively and literally. Watching those brief clips of the two fall out of love is just difficult to watch, and seeing what both of them stand to lose and how they confront that is even harder. I can’t even begin to imagine what that is like.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Writer-director Noah Baumbach digs deep into divorce with Marriage Story. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver some of their richest work as a couple whose once enviable union crumbles under the weight of mounting resentments and divergent needs.

Charlie (Driver) is a playwright who wants to stay in New York. Nicole (Johansson) is an actor who’s landed a coveted television role that requires her to relocate to Los Angeles. Their geographical dispute tests an already strained relationship. As Marriage Story begins, the couple’s divorce is already underway, with each enlisting legal squads deploying various tactics.

Yet Baumbach’s elegant narrative goes back and forth through time, showing how Charlie and Nicole fell in love and built a life together alongside a detailed, blow-by-blow chronicle of their marital dismantling.

Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Julie Hagerty, Merritt Wever, Azhy Robertson, Wallace Shawn, Martha Kelly, and Mark O’Brien also star.

Marriage Story opens in select theaters on November 6, 2019, followed by a release on Netflix on December 6, 2019. If you missed it, you can click right here for the first trailer.
