‘The King’ Trailer: It’s Timothée Chalamet vs Robert Pattinson In Netflix’s Gritty Take On William Shakespeare
  |  @   |

Netflix has released the newest trailer for director David Michôd‘s The King, an adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s Henry IV and Henry V.

The film stars Timothée Chalamet as Henry V, a wayward prince and reluctant heir to the English throne who has turned his back on royal life to live amongst the people. He assumes the throne when his father dies, and is forced to engage in an inherited war against The Dauphin (Robert Pattinson). Check out the trailer for The King below.

Starring alongside Chalamet and Pattinson is Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Lily-Rose Depp, Thomasin McKenzie, and Ben Mendelsohn. Edgerton also co-wrote the screenplay with Michôd.

As far as historical war epics go, this one is Netflix’s biggest. Henry V is celebrated as one of the greatest warriors kings of medieval times, and has been immortalized in the plays of Shakespeare. It sees a somewhat inexperienced Henry V going up against The Dauphin, who endlessly taunts the king of England into surrendering to France. Of course, Henry V tells him not to underestimate him. So if knights waving banners, courtyard executions, and swords swinging against each other is your thing, then The King might just be your kind of film.

And though there doesn’t appear to be an actual credit to William Shakespeare, there is a light nod to the play that comes at the end in the form of this line: “Already, I can feel the weight of this crown I wear.” This may be an allusion to “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.”

Regardless, The King features quite a strong story and an equally strong cast, which should be more than enough to draw in a large viewership.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Hal (Timothée Chalamet), wayward prince and reluctant heir to the English throne, has turned his back on royal life and is living among the people. But when his tyrannical father dies, Hal is crowned King Henry V and is forced to embrace the life he had previously tried to escape. Now the young king must navigate the palace politics, chaos and war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life “” including his relationship with his closest friend and mentor, the ageing alcoholic knight, John Falstaff (Joel Edgerton). Directed by David Michôd and co-written by Michôd and Edgerton, THE KING co-stars Sean Harris, Ben Mendelsohn, Robert Pattinson, and Lily-Rose Depp.

The King becomes available for streaming exclusively on Netflix on November 1, 2019. Click right here for the first trailer if you missed it.
