‘Game Of Thrones’ Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Exit Their ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy
  |  @   |

Star Wars will be entering a new galaxy as the Skywalker saga comes to its climactic conclusion this December.

While Disney and Lucasfilm have already laid out the groundwork for future projects with high-profile filmmakers like Rian Johnson, it looks like they will not be moving forward with a planned trilogy from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. More on the report below.

Deadline reports that Benioff and Weiss have exited their Star Wars project, which was first announced back in February of 2018. The first film in their trilogy was set to be the next Star Wars movie after The Rise of Skywalker is released this year. would have been released December 2022, 2024, and 2026, stepped away because of scheduling conflicts from their nine-figure deal with Netflix. So add that to Netflix taking away another key asset from Disney.

Here’s a statement they made to Deadline:

“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

However, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy didn’t close the doors on them completely. In fact, there may be an opportunity for Benioff and Weiss to return for their trilogy:

“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

This is a bit of sad news considering that seven of the eight seasons of Game of Thrones were the best television (or streaming) that I have watched in recent years. Additionally, the trilogy was said to take place in a different timeline and rumored to pull from Knights of the Old Republic, which would have made the trilogy a Game of Thrones version of Star Wars.

But it is not as though there won’t be enough content to go around. In addition to Johnson’s trilogy it was recently announced that Marvel Studios Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige is also developing a new Star Wars movie, not to mention the shows on Disney+. Titles include The Mandalorian from Jon Favreau starring Pedro Pascal, a Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel starring Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk, and the newly announced Obi-Wan Kenobi series from Deborah Chow once again starring Ewan McGregor in the role he played in the prequel trilogy.
