‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel ‘House Of The Dragon’ Announced For HBO Max
  |  @   |

Well, that didn’t take very long.

When HBO announced that they had canceled their untitled Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts, it was revealed that other spinoffs were still in the works and that one had already been given the greenlight.

Now it has been revealed at a press event at Warner Bros. Studios that the project is titled House of the Dragon, another Game of Thrones prequel, and that it will be available on the upcoming HBO Max streaming service, which launches in 2020. More on the report below.

Deadline says that House of the Dragon will center on House Targaryen, and will be based on the Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin‘s book Fire & Blood.

Martin and Ryan Condal will pen the script for the drama, which has received a 10-episode straight-to-series order. Game of Thrones veteran Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will act both as showrunners and executive producers. Martin and Vince Gerardis will co-executive produce.

This is definitely great news for Game of Thrones fans, who were disappointed by what happened to Jane Goldman‘s prequel. The quick full-series order is a bit of a surprise for this latest spinoff, given how the series has a reputation for a long and drawn-out development and production process. We’ve heard multiple times about how the original show needed to go through rewrites and reshoots to a point where they needed an entire year to work on a season. Even Goldman’s prequel was in the works for years before ultimately being canceled.

THR adds that House of the Dragon will be set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and that it will follow the beginnings of the end of House Targaryen. 300 years is far closer to the events of the original series than the newly canceled prequel series, which was going to be set 10,000 years earlier.

Of the announcement, HBO programming president Casey Bloys said:

“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories. We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

HBO has made it a priority to expand the Game of Thrones universe with spinoffs and prequels. While the Age of Heroes prequel series, which would have centered on the early days of Westeros, has been canceled, fans can breathe a little easier knowing that they can get their fill on HBO Max.

It will also be interesting to see how many more Game of Thrones spinoffs will be exclusively on HBO Max and which ones will be on the premium cable broadcast channel.

Of course, we will keep you up to date should any new developments on the streaming wars come in.
