Director Michael Dougherty Offers ‘Trick ‘r Treat 2’ Update
  |  @   |

It’s Halloween night, which means many of us are watching the perfect Halloween night movie: Trick ‘r Treat.

It’s been six years now, unbelievably, since Legendary Pictures thrilled fans with the announcement that Trick ‘r Treat 2 was on the way. But alas, it would seem that the announcement was more of a cruel trick than the wonderfully sweet treat it appeared to be at the time.

Still, Michael Dougherty—who made his feature directorial debut on the 2007 original, and has since gone on to helm Krampus and Godzilla: King of the Monsters—is asked about the sequel every year around this time, and this year was no different. You can see what he had to say about the sequel below.

ComicBookMovie was able to ask Dougherty about where Trick ‘r Treat 2 stands, to which Dougherty responded:

“Oh man, it’s that time of year! I feel like that’s become the new Halloween tradition: ask Mike about Trick “˜r Treat 2! [Laughs] Listen, I’m intrigued by the idea and it’s completely up to Legendary. It’s been a few years since we initially talked about it and there’s been a regime change since then. They still have the property and they love it and there’s still a long line of merchandise and a continuing line of comic books based on the film but the ball is in their court.

The moment they say they’re interested and ready to go, we’ll see if the stars align.”

But surprisingly enough, as the years have passed and he’s had plenty of time to think about it, Dougherty isn’t even sure there should be a sequel:

“At the same time, I think there’s something to be said about not sequelizing it. In a business that is obsessed with franchising and spinoffs and prequels and sequels, maybe there’s something to be said about just leaving it alone.”

I can understand both sides of this discussion. Personally, I’d still love to see a sequel made. But only if they come up with some great stories to tell. There’s no point in making it just to make it.

It would be tremendously difficult to match the greatness of the original, but that doesn’t mean they can’t deliver a great follow-up. Creepshow 2 isn’t as good as Creepshow, but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun.
