‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ Scheduled For A 2020 Start Date
  |  @   |

Warner Brothers’ Fantastic Beasts film franchise has given Harry Potter fans a look at a piece of history before the young wizard went on to save the world. So far, the two films have explored different geographical locations, with Where to Find Them (2016) set in New York, and The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) set in Paris.

Now the franchise heads to a new direction. This time they are heading to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Not only that but author J.K. Rowling will be penning the script with Steve Kloves. More on all of this below.

Deadline was the first to report on the news. It seems strange that it would be reported as a studio greenlighting a project considering that WB had planned for the franchise to be released in five films. Regardless, we are getting another sequel.

This time Kloves will be teamed up with Rowling, who wrote the first two features. Kloves is best known for adapting all but one of the Harry Potter films, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. So it is safe to say that he is well-versed in everything Harry Potter.

Fans can expect to see Eddie Redmayne back as Newt Scamander, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, and Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald. Ezra Miller will reprise his role as Credence/Aurelius Dumbledore, while Alison Sudol returns to play Queenie Goldstein, with Katherine Waterston playing her sister Tina Goldstein, and Dan Fogler coming back to play Jacob Kowalski.

Jessica Williams — who played Professor Eulalie “Lally” Hicks, a teacher at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the American equivalent of Hogwarts — also returns. Sources tell Deadline that she will have a much bigger role in the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

David Yates is directing and producing, re-teaming with producers David Heyman, Lionel Wigram, Tim Lewis, Rowling, and Kloves.

As a No-Maj, I really enjoyed that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a piece of Harry Potter history that didn’t require any prior knowledge; unlike Harry Potter, which was adapted from Rowling’s novels. However, The Crimes of Grindelwald felt like it deviated from that mindset and was too busy setting up other sequels rather than telling its own story.

Fantastic Beasts 3 was originally scheduled to shoot in July 2019, but then was pushed back to the fall given that production needed more prep time given how quickly they turned around Crimes of Grindelwald.

The untitled Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently scheduled to open in theaters on November 21, 2021.
