‘Rick and Morty’ and ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Writers To Pen ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Moon Knight’ Series For Disney+

When then Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige came to the D23 Expo to announce that She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel would be three new TV series joining the Disney+ lineup, fans got excited. However, the three new shows were still in very early development without a cast or creative crew.

But now She-Hulk and Moon Knight have found writers to begin working on the projects. According to a new report, Rick and Morty writer Jessica Gao will be working on the former, while The Umbrella Academy‘s Jeremy Slater will work on the latter. More on both of these stories, below.

THR says that Slater will be both developing and leading the Moon Knight writing team. The hero with an ambiguous origins story is best described as Marvel’s take on Batman. In it, Marc Spector is a mercenary for hire who is left for dead in the Egyptian desert. Resurrected by locals who worship the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, Spector is offered a second chance at life only if he lets the all-powerful deity use his body as an avatar. When he awakens, he discovers that he is wrapped in the silver shroud that covers Khonshu’s statue. However, his new lease on life may have come with some nasty side effects. Is Marc actually a superhero with god-like powers or is he crazy?

Slater is well-known around comic book adaptation circles as he wrote the script for the 2015 widely panned Fantastic Four movie. In contrast, he did write and develop the pilot for Netflix’s adaptation of The Umbrella Academy, a Dark Horse Comics-published series created by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Ba. The show was met with huge success, garnering 45 million viewers in its first month of release, alone. The show is currently shooting its second season.

Now on to She-Hulk. As aforementioned, Jessica Gao will be a part of the writing team for the female version of The Incredible Hulk. A super strong lawyer, Jessica Walters is Bruce Banner’s cousin. When she requires an emergency blood transfusion, she gets it from Bruce, which gives her the same powers as the Hulk, but a touch milder. But what was interesting about the reveal at D23, was that the title card was against Lady Justice, which may indicate that the show may be Marvel’s take on a legal drama, and a possible replacement to Netflix’s Daredevil.

Gao has written several episodes of Rick and Morty, for which she won an Emmy for writing the “Pickle Rick” episode. Her other credits include Silicon Valley, and a comedy pilot for ABC titled Lazy Rich Asians she executive produced.

None of these shows has an official release date as of yet. Of course, we will keep you posted should any of that change.
