4K Review: Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell
  |  @   |

3 From Hell
4K | Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Rob Zombie
Cast: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bill Moseley, Dee Wallace, Danny Trejo, Sid Haig, Richard Brake
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release date: October 15, 2019

Rob Zombie‘s films are hotly debated and highly controversial. The rock star turned director broke onto the scene with his 2003’s House of 1,000 Corpses, a messy gore fest in the vain of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The film introduced the world to the maniacal Firefly Family and its three antagonists: Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), and Otis Driftwood (Bill Moseley). Two years later, Zombie worked out the kinks and created a grindhouse masterpiece, The Devil’s Rejects. Rejects was an epic of dirt and violence and had one of the best endings ever; one that seemingly negated any chance of a sequel. In the decade and a half since, Zombie reimagined the Halloween franchise and made several films sharing his trademarked hellbilly style. But alas the Firefly family has returned, as Zombie completes his trilogy with 3 From Hell. After a limited theatrical run, the film made a return to theaters last week for one day only and is now available on 4k Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack.

Blu-ray Review: Galaxy Quest 20th Anniversary Steelbook Edition

Galaxy Quest
Limited Edition 20th Anniversary Steelbook Blu-ray
Best Buy Exclusive
Directed by Dean Parisot
Story by David Howard; Screenplay by David Howard & Robert Gordon
Cast: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Enrico Colantoni, Daryl Mitchell, Sam Rockwell, Justin Long
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release date: September 21, 2019

Back in 1999, Dean Parisot made a little movie called Galaxy Quest, a scifi-adventure comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman, which at first glance seemed like a parody — and a poke at — scifi franchises like Star Trek. There’s the cast of a cancelled 1970s science fiction television series forced to eke out a living at science fiction fan conventions and grand opening store promotions 20 years after their heyday. Said cast resents the show’s main star, a scene-stealer who takes credit for their successes and often makes paid appearances without them. And there’s the rabid, geeky fans at the convention who seemingly can’t differentiate between an actor and the role he played.

But while Galaxy Quest is humorous in its parody of all those stereotypes, it turns out the film is actually a loving homage to science fiction and its loyal fans. And it’s perfect in every way.

Release Date: October 15, 2019

CBS is readying to launch in January a new streaming series, Star Trek: Picard, featuring Patrick Stewart‘s famed Starfleet officer Jean-Luc Picard. The actor led the cast of TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation as the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise for 7 seasons beginning in 1987 and then in 4 theatrical films, the final being in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. To familiarize viewers with Jean-Luc Picard and the Star Trek: The Next Generation universe, CBS and Paramount have released Star Trek: Picard Movie & TV Collection, a new Blu-ray box set centering around the character.

The 6-disc Blu-ray set includes all four feature films starring TNG cast — Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Nemesis — as well as the scifi television show’s 2-part episode “The Best of Both Worlds.” If you don’t already own one of the previously released movie Blu-ray box sets, then this new Picard-centric package is the way to go as far as what you get for the price — and you get a lot.

Blu-ray Review: Midsommar

Midsommar
Blu-ray | DVD | Digital
Director: Ari Aster
Writer: Ari Aster
Cast: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Archie Madekwe, Ellora Torchia, Will Poulter
Distributor: Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: October 8, 2019

If there was a movie that could epitomize living through a great tragedy while being in a toxic relationship, it would have to be Ari Aster‘s ambitious film Midsommar. An unconventional horror to say the least, the film is a slow burn that scares you at just the right moments, and then hits you even harder when you least expect it. Though that slow burn pacing may backfire, there is more than enough from Aster’s deft hand direction and star Florence Pugh’s performance to grab the audience’s attention and never let go. My full Blu-ray review of Midsommar here below.

Spider-Man: Far From Home
4K Ultra HD | Blu-ray | DVD | Digital
Director: Jon Watts
Writer: Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers
Cast: Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, J. B. Smoove, Jacob Batalon, Martin Starr, Marisa Tomei, Jake Gyllenhaal
Distributor: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Release Date: October 1, 2019

It’s a bit ironic that Sony and Disney would come to an agreement to share Spider-Man one more time just before the home release of Spider-Man: Far From Home. So there is a slight cause for celebration. The webslinger is a permanent fixture within Marvel Comics, but has had a hard time playing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sandbox thanks to rights issues. Luckily, the two sides have been able to come an agreement. And as such, we have been given two, and now soon to be three, great standalone films.

Whatever happens next is still unclear, but fans can rest easy knowing that Spider-Man has at least spent some time in the MCU. Now Spider-Man: Far From Home, one of the better live-action Spider-Man films, is available for you to own on various home entertainment formats. Filled with a number of bonus features, this will be something every Marvel Studios and Spider-Man fan needs to have. Check out my review of the Blu-ray Edition here below.
