A new 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was just one of those films that failed to take off. One reboot from Disney that was to be directed by David Fincher failed to secure the funding and could not agree on where to shoot the film. But Fox was also interested in reviving the project, and last May it gained X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singerannounced that20,000 Leagues Under the Sea would be his next project.
Now we have a start time. According to a new report, Singer will begin shooting his adaptation of the Jules Verne novel this fall. More on the story after the jump.
Bryan Singer is now in the post-production stage of X-Men: Apocalypse, which is rumored to mark the end of a franchise he has overseen for the better part of a decade. But he also has ventured outside of the mutant world by helming Superman Returns, and the historical-thriller Valkyrie. But now it looks like the director will be taking on a whole new adventure that will take him to depths of the sea.
According to a new report, Singer has announced 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea as his next project following X-Men: Apocalypse. More on this story below.
When last we heard about David Fincher‘s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Disney decided to put the film on hold for financial reasons. John Carter was a huge blow to the live-action department causing Disney to draft some new plans for some of their other riskier live-action films. Not even the casting of Brad Pitt or an “older A-list star” could convince them to move forward with the project.
There was a three-month production pause for the film when Disney decided to pull back on the project. During that time, Andrew Kevin Walker polished the Steven Zallian draft. Now that we are past the three-month pause, there is still no word on when Disney can give Fincher the go ahead to produce the film.
Disney is still trying to recuperate from the massive financial loss of John Carter. Their live-action department has been less than stellar as of late, so it’s really no surprise that they are holding off on making yet another expensive live-action film. Or maybe they are waiting to see what happens with The Lone Ranger before they start production for the remake of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
The film, which will be directed by David Fincher, is currently being put on hold for now. Variety reports that during the three-month production pause, Andrew Kevin Walker will be making improvements to Steven Zallian‘s script.
I know this is coming late in the day, but I couldn’t let this occasion pass without mentioning it: Today marks what would be Jules Verne‘s 183rd birthday.
As with many special occasions, Google has created one of their popular doodles in celebration, this one being an interactive nautical theme referencing the author’s popular novel, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea.
There’s a lever on the right side of the logo that allows you to control the doodle submarine, but what I didn’t realize is that, according to The Telegraph, if you view it on an iPad or iPhone, you can tilt the device to have the water level move in any direction you want!
