The truth is out there. Nothing embodies that saying like the data presented in How To Fake A Moon Landing: Exposing the Myths of Science Denial. No matter how you slice it, science is real and it has led mankind on some wondrous adventures and completely changed our lives. From how we view the cosmos to explaining things a bit closer to home here on Earth, we see science everywhere. Now before you go getting your panties in a bunch, this book doesn’t go out of it’s way to debunk anything you learned in Sunday School. Instead, it examines how, through scientific methods, deductions (and yes, proof) can be found in a plethora of areas.
From ridiculous conspiracy theories such as Global Warming lies and the Moon Landing hoax to more mundane, medicinally focused issues such as Homeopathic remedies and Chiropractic cures, Darryl Cunningham delves deeply into the facts. Knowing that both sides in an argument are apt to use disinformation to further their agendas, he presents everything in a humorous and enlightening manner.
This was an interesting read, make no mistake about it. There were things in Did I Do That? The Best (And Worst) Of The ’90s that I do not remember at all…thereby answering the question posed in the title. But many of them I do recollect having committed. But venture forth and let me explain in more detail, my friend…
Chapter one is dedicated to Super Soakers. You remember them, right? Squirt guns on steroids…or maybe Super Soldier Serum, whatever. However you want to describe them, they changed the way we have water fights forevermore. A few pages later we get reminded of how awesome the nineties were for Bart Simpson and how Bartmania swept the nation. Then we move on to how Batman changed the way we perceive superheroes on the silver screen, Tim Burton gave us a darker and more enigmatic version of the Caped Crusader (and I would like to thank him for Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman). Luckily Joel Schumacher later came along and gave us Bat-nipples, ruining the whole franchise for almost a decade. Busy as always, Tim Burton had Beetlejuice and several other films that kept his name in the limelight, so to speak. These are discussed in the book, too!
Abrams Comic Arts has released Gonzo: A Graphic Biography of Hunter S. Thompson and that word “graphic” certainly takes on many different definitions here when applied to the protagonist of this true-life comic novel.
The public’s perception of the late writer/journalist/self-made psychopath (by his own volition) is as varied and misunderstood as the man himself. Some of us only know Hunter S. Thompson as a modern day mid/late 20th century figure whose thirst and unbridled lust for all things excess is regarded as the stuff of filthy, unrelenting legend. Some of us only know him as Uncle Duke, the famous cartoon character who shook up the long-running comic strip Doonesbury when he first appeared in the mid 1970s in that strip, a character that Thompson had gone on record as hating. Some of us know him as simply a film character, portrayed by Johnny Depp in director Terry Gilliam’s cult film adaptation of what seemed as unfilmable as William S. Burroughs’ Naked Lunch, Thompson’s arguably best known work, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. And there was also the recent attempt at a film adaptation of another Thompson work, last year’s box office mess, The Rum Diary, again with Depp as its star.
