Straight from the good old 86th floor, the Man of Bronze has returned! This is a bold prediction from me, but Doc Savage is Dynamite Entertainment’s new Shadow. I see this title spanning multiple spin-offs and miniseries. Not because of any kind of over-saturation planning by Dynamite, but because it’s THAT good, and the character has THAT much potential.
I can’t imagine that writer Chris Roberson had it easy. Not only did he have to write a comic book, he had to write one that not only included mind-bending science, but 1930’s “slang” as well. Roll all of those up together and it had to be a pretty daunting task. But, thankfully, Roberson knows his way around writing comics. In Doc Savage #1, Roberson writes a very well crafted first issue, and, I can only assume, the first part of a storyline that is far from over. This is a great introduction to the world and characters of the Doc Savage universe, and, on its own, a very entertaining story.

There’s a good chance I might get some flak for this, but here goes nothing: I’ve never seen the original Battlestar Galactica television series. Ronald D. Moore’s 2004 series happens to be among my favorite shows of all time, but I’ve never really been interested its predecessor. With that being said, I decided to give the new Battlestar Galactica comic book series from Dynamite a chance as an introduction of sorts to the show that started it all. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning and illustrated by Cezar Razek, Battlestar Galactica is now on its third issue and there are some frakkin’ crazy inter-dimensional happenings going on.
Starbuck and Apollo are still stuck in an alternate timeline where those who should be dead are alive and vice versa. Captured by none other than Boomer, Apollo struggles to convince the downtrodden resistance of this dimension “” including his dead wife, Serina and his father, Adama “” that he is, in fact, Apollo from another history.

The Owl #1 is the latest entry in Dynamite Entertainment’s pulp heroes line, which has been pretty successful, both critically and financially. Does The Owl measure up to the rest of the books in the line? Let’s take a look..
J. T. Krul gives us a different take on the pulp heroes with this book. It’s got a heavy Captain America vibe, and normally that kind of thing would bother me, but here it doesn’t because it fits both the book and the character so well. Krul avoids all the “poor me” traps that normally would fall under a time displaces hero, and instead, let’s the hero have fun and be aggressive in this “brand new world” that he’s been flung into. He allows The Owl to have some fun here, and while there is some regret about his part, it’s pretty few and far between and doesn’t weigh down the book at all.
I grew up reading the comics section of my local newspaper every day and on Sundays I anticipated my parents getting that day’s paper on our doorstep bright and early so I could tear into that brick of smudgy newsprint and pluck the full-color comics supplement from its depressing clutches. Back then I cared little for what was happening in the world because kids didn’t really need to know; we had plenty of time to fret over foreign wars, rigged elections, and skyrocketing gasoline prices when we got older. When I began my decade plus-dalliance with comics it was the funnier strips like Blondie, The Family Circus, Hagar the Horrible, Funky Winkerbean, and of course Beetle Bailey that I favored above all others.
Back then it was not necessarily my choice because the superhero, sci-fi, and adventure strips that my peers from decades before the birth of my own parents thrilled to on a daily basis were all but a distant memory. At least in my city’s newspapers they were. I had to venture to my local public library to check out volumes of the collected comic strip escapades of Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy, a boyhood hero of mine for a short while following the release of the 1990 movie directed by and starring Warren Beatty. Once I entered my teen years and embraced comic books I stopped reading the daily comics section almost completely, with exceptions made for certain rare days when I would be having breakfast and only lacked decent reading material within my grasp.
