Deal: Dead Like Me: The Complete Series DVD

The Gold Box spotlight deal of the day over at Amazon today is Dead Like Me: The Complete Collection on DVD for only $29.99 (that’s 57% off the list price of $69.98).

This collection includes both seasons of the former ShowTime series, as well as the more recent direct-to-DVD sequel Dead Like Me: Life After Death. This release also comes with deleted scenes, cast commentary, and a photo gallery, as well as a behind-the-scenes featurette. There’s also “The Music of Dead Like Me,” “Dead Like Me…..Again,” and “Putting Life Into Death” featurettes.

Created by Bryan Fuller, this series centers on George (Ellen Muth), an 18-year-old girl who dies and becomes a grim reaper, where she helps the souls of newly dead move on to the afterlife, though she is stuck in this world unable to move on herself. The show was able to cleverly combine humor with drama, as George reluctantly performed her reaper duties while trying to hold down her day job at a temp agency. George learns the way of the reaping undead from her fellow reapers, lead by taskmaster Rube, wonderfully played by Mandy Patinkin.

MP3 Deal: Van Halen’s ‘Van Halen II’

Today’s MP3 album deal of the day over at Amazon is Van Halen‘s Van Halen II for only $2.99 and allow me to stress that if you do not have this album, it is well worth this low price so grab it today while it’s on sale!

Here’s where I justify the cost: MP3 songs are typically 99 cents, therefore for Van Halen II to be worth the price, you need at least 3 songs worth having: “Somebody Get Me A Doctor,” “DOA,” and “Beautiful Girls” — BAM! Yeah, I go right for the heavy stuff, but there’s plenty of lighter tracks on the album like “Dance The Night Away,” “Women In Love,” and the cover song “You’re No Good” (which was a hit for Linda Ronstadt in the 1970s).

Still need convincing to shell out $3 of your hard-earned money? Umm, it’s David Lee Roth era VAN HALEN! It’s guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen shredding it up in 1979 — plus, check out his 1-minute classical guitar solo “Spanish Fly”!

MP3 Deal: William Shatner’s ‘The Transformed Man’ For $1

Most people know William Shatner for his iconic role as James T. Kirk, the Captain of the USS Enterprise on the 1960s TV series Star Trek (and its subsequent movies). The actor went on in the 1980s to popularize the title character on TV’s TJ Hooker and today he’s a favorite on the show Boston Legal, where he plays law firm partner Denny Crane. Oh, and let’s not forget his most-seen persona as The Priceline Negotiator in the Priceline commercials.

While everyone knows William Shatner the actor, how many people are familiar with William Shatner the music artist? I’m guessing not many. Now’s your chance to check it out, because Amazon’s MP3 album deal of the day is William Shatner’s The Transformed Man for only 99 cents (discounted price is for today only).

The Transformed Man, released in 1968, was Shatner’s first foray into music and contains six tracks of the actor performing spoken word versions of some popular tunes of the time like The Beatles’ “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” and The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Most of the songs are accompanied by dramatic (and … I … mean … dramatic) readings from the works of William Shakespeare against psychedelic orchestrations and definitely what sounds like the Star Trek television series soundtrack. Shatner took the opportunity to juxtapose classic literature with modern-day poetic lyrics, and til this day, stands by this experimental endeavor.
