‘Mad Men’ Actor Jared Harris To Become ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’ Villain Moriarty
  |  @   |

Since before Guy Ritchie‘s Sherlock Holmes even came out, rumors about who might play the longtime arch nemesis to Holmes, Moriarty, in Sherlock Holmes 2 have been swirling.

The most popular name associated with the role was that of Brad Pitt, who was at one time reported to have joined the film, though the validity of these reports were disputed and denied on numerous occasions. Now comes confirmation that Pitt will not be playing Moriarty, and that Ritchie has found the actor he does want for the role. Mad Men star and son of the legendary Richard Harris, Jared Harris, has been chosen to become the villain and constant opposition of the famed detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.).

Stephen Fry To Play Robert Downey Jr.’s Brother In ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’
  |  @   |

Actor Stephen Fry has joined the cast of Sherlock Holmes 2, the upcoming sequel to the 2009 hit directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams.

Fry is set to play Mycroft Holmes, the older brother of Downey’s Sherlock character. If the character plays out like he did in Arthur Conan Doyle‘s books, Mycroft is more intelligent than Sherlock and works for super secret government agency, but also more lazy than his younger sibling. Sources say the character will be a bit of an oddball and suffer from social anxieties.

Image: Leonard Nimoy as Sherlock Holmes
  |  @   |

As I had hoped, my Christmas this year was filled with lots of Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes. Along with a viewing this weekend of the new Sherlock Holmes film, which opened Christmas Day, there was also a massive family gathering on Christmas night to watch the new Star Trek movie on Blu-ray.

And Santa brought me a bunch of Star Trek audiobooks, Blu-rays, and games (you can see a picture of my Trek haul over in TrekMovie‘s reader gift roundup post), as well as The Complete 2-Volume Annotated Sherlock Holmes, which I have had my eye on for the last five years and spent Christmas Eve night drooling over. Oh, and on Christmas we launched our The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Contest, where we have three sets of four all-new Sherlock Holmes novels to give away to our readers!

And what’s better than Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes? A combination of the two, that’s what! Hero Complex found a photo of Leonard Nimoy — everyone’s favorite Vulcan — portraying Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous literary detective during a national stage tour in the 1970s. (That’s the photo here at right; click for larger full view.)

To celebrate the release of this new movie as well as the history of the cherished Arthur Conan Doyle character itself, Londonist went above and beyond the above and beyond to bring us a very cool new look at the actual locations within the world surrounding Holmes: London. The beloved England city is as much a character of the Sherlock Holmes mythology as Watson is, and now you can visit the places and general locations that the crime solving duo visit with this detailed mapping. Head on over to the website to check out their handy work!

The impressive thing about this interactive map is that they didn’t half-ass it at all; the website went ahead and re-read all of the old Sherlock Holmes stories and put together all of the locations to map out. It comes handy with a key that specifies precise locations, general locations, actual Holmes-related locations, and paths that were traveled. No word yet on how many of these locations will be featured in this latest Sherlock Holmes adventure.
