While off at wrestling bootcamp, I learned a many things. I learned the art of the double turn, how to properly hip toss my opponents, while transitioning into the “No Lock.” Yes, I learned a lot of things, but the one think I didn’t learn was how to manage my time properly. Still working on that, but until then, let’s talk about some comic books since that’s what you’re all here for. Ladies and gentlemen, this ain’t ballet! This… is… THE GoD LIST!!!

I’ve intentionally taken about a week off from writing for the site, with good reason. The shooting in Aurora, CO, has affected me in a way that I have a very hard time expressing. The simple fact is that a completely insane and terrible person decided that he would murder a bunch of people for no reason. In my opinion, this person doesn’t have a name. He shouldn’t be given a chance to be known by anyone and his name shouldn’t be present on the lips of anyone. The majority of us who write for this site and plenty of those of us who read this site were present at midnight screenings across the country. This could have happened to any one of us, but it didn’t. It happened to a group of people who are very similar to us, and they should be remembered. They should be honored, and I’ve been trying to get an idea to honor these people, but nothing I could think of would be enough. So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to list their names so that we don’t forget. They’re the people who we should remember, and they’re the people we should be talking about, so to Jessica Ghawi, Matt McQuinn, Micayla Medek, John Larimer, Alex Sullivan, Alex Teves, Jonathan Blunk, Jesse Childress, AJ Boik, Rebecca Ann Wingo, Gordon W. Cowden, and Veronica Moser-Sullivan, we know who you are, we care about who you are, and we won’t forget you.

Now back to your regularly scheduled The GoD List….

There will never be a comic quite like Calvin and Hobbes. For ten years Bill Watterson worked on an extraordinary ode to the trials and tribulations and joy that comes with being an imaginative 6 year old. It was arguably the greatest newspaper comic strip this side of the twentieth century. In part that’s because its main character was allowed to be as selfish and destructive as he was sweet and imaginative, in other words, he was allowed to feel like an actual 6 year old.

Then one day the strip was gone and comics have been trying to fill that void ever since. Other artists and storytellers have tackled friendship and growing pains, but one comic, Axe Cop, has emerged that really captures the sense of play that kids have. The make-the-story-up-as-you-go-along sensibility where dinosaurs, robots, and aliens are casually thrown into a plot. And unlike Watterson who would usually pull back to his real world in the last panel, Axe Cop digs deeper and deeper into its world of make-believe.
