‘Batman Incorporated #13’ Sees The End Of Grant Morrison’s Run
  |

On Wednesday July 31, 2013, it all ended. Grant Morrison‘s epic seven-year run with the character of Batman came to a close with Batman Incorporated #13.

This issue marks the end of an emotional run in which Morrison added so much to the mythos of Batman which revived older characters, created new ones, and ultimately told arguably the best Batman story of all time. I’ve been a huge supporter of Morrison’s Batman work for years now, and I’ve enjoyed it every step of the way. As a fan, what I wanted out of this issue was an oversized blowout that gave Morrison a fitting, emotional goodbye to the character and the seven years’ worth of material and life that he put into his Batman work. But that’s not what happened. What happened was more of a sweet kiss goodbye, not a world-burning epic, but honestly? I think this was definitely the right way to go. In retrospect, I can see that Morrison has been saying goodbye since the beginning of the New 52 and even before that with Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne in 2010.

“Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb.” Truer words were never spoken. It’s these words that summarize what was so great about Batman (1966). A higher level of social commentary was beautifully woven alongside a campy nature that is enjoyable on both a childlike mentality, while also appealing to the ironic appreciation of many adults. Yes, enjoying the ’60s Batman was hipster before hipster was a thing. But not only was this movie, and show, enjoyable, these worlds also perfectly embody the message that was in every episode. This quote, specifically, shows that no matter what you do, sometimes things are completely out of your control. Yes, despite what your parents and teachers told you as a child, everything is not possible. For example, it’s impossible for me to make any sense in the opening paragraphs of The GoD List, a weekly feature about new comic books, not the brilliant wonders of Batman (1966). Perhaps some day, but not this day. Take that, relevancy.

Guys, seriously, I love Florence + The Machine, I’m listening to their MTV Unplugged album right now, and it’s just so good. Right now is a really good time for a fan of female vocalists. Anyway, I know that has nothing to do with what we’re supposed to be talking about right now, and that’s fine, but you should know that Daniel Bryan was robbed on Sunday and he should have taken home the championship! What are we talking about again? Oh right, comics. Sure, there are comics coming out this week, but for the life of me, I can’t think of anything that I’d rather read more than Batman Incorporated, so that’s what I’ll be talking about at length, while Chris talks about some new comics, some new old comics, and some that are in between! So, strap in to your seat belts because I’m about to take you on a nice long ride where I talk a whole lot about Batman. No backseat drivers! Only The GoD List!
