What happens if you mix an adventure worthy of Indiana Jones with the sass and sarcasm of Hellboy, and then sprinkle it with a heaping helping of holiday magic? You get the surprisingly entertaining dark comedy from Image Comics: Krampus #1 by Brian Joines.

It’s probably tough to pull off a Christmas-themed comic that actually appeals to fans who prefer a gritty story over one covered in sugarplums and dipped in chocolate, and I say this because I recall only one other (The Last Christmas by Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan) that managed it. Brian Joines, however, has stepped up to the Christmas comic challenge and has emerged victorious thanks to his delightfully wicked “hero” and his own twisted sense of humor.

Point of Impact #1
Story by Jay Faerber
Art & Cover by Kory Kuranel
Letters by Charles Pritchett
Image Comics
Release Date: October 10, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Wow! Talk about under the radar! There’s some Image releases that get TONS of hype. You’re Walking Dead, your Saga, etc. But Point of Impact #1 comes out without so much as a decent press release and it’s one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in months!

Jay Faerber turns in a script that is straight up modern day crime/thriller noir. It’s got all the elements of the classic murder mystery thriller, updated for today’s audience. There’s murder, adultery, cheating, backstabbing, and a little bit of Law & Order type police drama thrown in for good measure. The story is absolutely riveting, and is a great first chapter in this mini series.

The Pound #1
Written by Stephan Nilson

Lettering by Charles Pritchett
Frozen Beach Studios
Release date: March 30, 2011

I always like when a new horror comic comes around, and that’s what we’re getting with The Pound, a new series from Frozen Beach Studios. The Pound has a premise that I have kind of seen before, but is different enough for me latch on to. The Pound has a lot of great potential, and a first issue that sets everything up in a nice way and gets the mystery going.

The issue starts with a bit of horror, as we see the standard girl in peril in a dark alley, until she is rescued by a couple of werewolves. We then cut to Scott and Howie, a couple of exterminators who lose their jobs in a round of layoffs, but decide to pull themselves up and start their own extermination company. A couple of weeks later, the company has been started, and the pair run into a case that may be more than they can handle. Where this case will lead them is anyone’s guess.
