Scary Smash

Everyone already adores geek god Joss Whedon for the many treasures he has bestowed upon us, so why not branch out to as many forms of entertainment as humanly possible?

Whedon recently starred as the action hero lead in a short film titled Scary Smash, written by 5-year-old Brett Baligad. The short is part of something called Written by a Kid, where little ones tell their stories as we watch their young visions realized by real directors, actors, and so on.

You can check out Scary Smash (as well as a couple fun behind-the-scenes videos) below!

Pre-Order Now: Season 1 Of Animated Series ‘Dan Vs.’

Dan Vs.

An animated series that some of you may be familiar with and others not at all familiar with, Dan Vs. is finally making its way to home video.

The show, which comes from the same animation studio behind episodes of Family Guy, The Simpsons, Beavis and Butt-Head, and King of the Hill, airs on Discovery and Hasbro’s The Hub network, but, if you’re like myself, is also a show you’ve never heard of—to the point of it already getting through a significant chunk of its second season unnoticed—on a channel you’ve never heard of. One of the primary reasons for this is because it used to be the Discovery Kids channel, and most of its content is aimed at a much younger audience. Upon further inspection, however, the channel does air re-runs of ALF, so we should all give it a peek on that basis alone.

For those of you who are aware of and watch Dan Vs., you’ve likely been wondering just when the first season of the show would be released on DVD. The answer is later this summer, on July 17th, and you can pre-order it right now.

Monsters University

The first teaser trailer for Disney*Pixar’s prequel to the 2001 hit Monsters Inc., titled Monsters University, has been released online.

In the movie, Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) are back in college, and they may not have started as the best of friends. The teaser shows off one of the college pranks Sully pulled on Mike…surely the first of many we’ll see between the two.

Disney’s ‘Prep & Landing’ To Return With ‘Operation: Secret Santa’

prep & landingLast year, Disney premiered Prep & Landing, a half-hour television special about an elite unit of Santa’s Elves known as Prep & Landing.

Walt Disney Animation Studios is planning to bring the unit back in a 7-minute animated short called Prep & Landing: Operation: Secret Santa, with Betty White as the voice of Mrs. Claus.

Prep & Landing: Operation: Secret Santa will air on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) during the holiday classic A Charlie Brown Christmas. Both programs will repeat on Thursday, December 16 from 8:00-9:00 p.m., ET.

The original Prep & Landing was the first television special produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and premiered last December.

Aside from being from Disney, which is enough right there to get me to check it out, the original Christmas special also had Dave Foley as the voice of Wayne, one of the elite elves, and Foley is back for this new adventure! I totally loved the first Prep & Landing and was hoping by now it would be out on DVD, as I think it’s a great holiday story that I’d love to see every year. I actually still have it saved on my DVR (luckily!), and have watched it a few times already, so I’m really looking forward to this follow-up. I only wish it was longer than just 7 minutes.

Movie Review: ‘The Strip’

The StripThe Strip
Directed by: Jameel Khan
Starring Dave Foley, Jenny Wade, Rodney Scott, Billy Aaron Brown, Federico Dordei, Cory Christmas, Noureen DeWulf, Chelcie Ross
Bata Films
Rated PG-13
Release Date: December 4, 2009 (limited)

The Strip is a new independent film from Bata Films that tells the story of a group of small-town retail store workers trying to find themselves. It’s a story that we’ve seen before, but that works on many different levels, as witnessed in movies like Clerks, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Waiting. What differentiates it from movies like that is its open subtlety. The movie doesn’t rush anywhere or get too out of hand, and though hilarious in the movies mentioned, it avoids the constant swearing and adult themes as much as possible in an attempt to thrive on being what it is: just a simple tale of a few lives looking to rediscover their true paths.

The Strip refers to a strip mall where a little store called Electri-City is located. It’s a blatant Radio Shack ripoff, and sells many generic brand products that no one has ever heard of, but because people love cheap crap, they do have customers…sometimes. This branch is run by the manager, Glenn (Dave Foley). He obviously has the passion and the drive, but you can tell he’s in a bit of a mid-life crisis, though he’d never admit it. He makes an effort in raising sales numbers by trying trust exercises with his team, such as all holding hands and trying to untie themselves. Unfortunately, these exercises aren’t completely successful due to the fact that his staff is a grab bag of varying personalities that don’t exactly mesh together well.
