Blu-ray Review: Hatchet III – Unrated Director’s Cut
  |

Hatchet III
Unrated Director’s Cut
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by BJ McDonnell
Starring Danielle Harris, Zach Galligan, Caroline Williams
Dark Sky Films
Release Date: August 13, 2013

The latest installment of Adam Green‘s extra-bloody slasher movie saga Hatchet III has arrived in full force on Blu-ray, but unlike the first two movies, Green did not direct this one. He both wrote and produced the new movie, but decided prior to filming to hand directing duties off to newcomer BJ McDonnell – Green’s cinematographer on the first two Hatchet movies. When the original premiered on the film festival circuit in late 2006 and arrived briefly in theaters and on home video a year later, horror fans who had long been swamped by turgid remakes and watered-down PG-13 studio offerings lapped up every drop of crimson grue dripping from its celluloid frames. Though far, far from being a box office success, Hatchet‘s explosive popularity with fans warranted the requisite sequel.

Arriving almost five years later and with little of the fanfare that greeted the original when it debuted, Hatchet II briefly wormed its way into the national mindset once the news broke that it had been pulled from most theater chains due its being released without an MPAA rating. The seemingly manufactured controversy (which reminded me of the mild uproar over homophobic slurs used in Eli Roth’s first Hostel movie that was kept alive on the letters page of Fangoria for a brief period in 2006 mostly through the efforts of the director himself) couldn’t help Hatchet II build a fraction of the cult following earned by its predecessor and overall audience reaction was unimpressive. However, it did well enough for a prospective third movie to get the green light, which brings us to the present day and Hatchet III.

Victor Crowley Returns With A Bloody Vengeance In The First ‘Hatchet III’ Trailer
  |

The latest in a low-budget slasher franchise that kicked off with a bang over six years ago and whose first sequel encountered controversy during its brief, unrated theatrical run, Hatchet III is about to unleash some more gruesome carnage and sick fun this summer. MPI/Dark Sky Films have announced the movie’s release date and unveiled its first teaser trailer.

You can watch the trailer here below.

Hatchet III, which marks the directorial debut of BJ McDonnell (a camera operator on the first two movies as well as last summer’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), was filmed in Louisiana in May and June of 2012. Back for the third installment are Danielle Harris as the series’ resilient heroine Marybeth and slasher icon Kane Hodder as the monstrous backwoods psychopath Victor Crowley. Joining the cast for this latest bout of gory mayhem are Zach Galligan (Gremlins), Derek Mears (the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast), and Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs), among others. Original writer and director Adam Green wrote the screenplay and executive produced.

Must Watch: First Trailer For Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Predators’ Released
  |  @   |

As promised, a trailer for the Robert Rodriguez produced and Nimród Antal directed reboot, Predators, has been unleashed online.

The trailer is pretty awesome and it begins by showing us the group of humans after they’ve first been brought to this mysterious jungle planet. After that, you’ll get to peek at each of the cast and see a lot of tense moments as the humans fight to survive, as well as a few peeks at the vicious Predators who are hunting them. Overall, it’s a very effective trailer; it looks like they nailed the tone of 1987’s Predator while adding some nasty new creatures and a hell of a lot more of them than the one deadly alien from the original film.

Remain in the shadows and cautiously make your way over to the other side to watch the first trailer for Predators!
