So, there’s a review in here, promise, and it’s going to be about the new collection from 215ink called Ignition Vol. 1. The lede is just, as people who call writing a profession say, buried. First, I need a moment to qualify what I mean and give a frame of reference. So, sorry, but: you can always circumvent that by skipping to the end if you’d like.
There’s been something of a renaissance of creator owned content lately, with a bevy of titles being announced from creators like Grant Morrison, Steve Niles, Brian K Vaughan, and other industry heavyweights. Although artistic control has been a high profile issue in the comics world at least since the early 90s -what with the Creator’s Bill of Rights in 1988, and the creation of Image Comics in 1992- the past calendar year has seemed like something of a watershed moment for the publicity and frequency of creator owned projects. Every major publisher, I believe, has an imprint dedicated to these projects, and the whole thing smacks of a cash-in. That sounds cynical.

Oh FUBAR, you had me at “blarg.”
FUBAR #2, Empire of the Rising Dead is a 200+ page, World War II with zombies, short story extravaganza. Whereas the first issue took place in the European theater, this issue takes place solely in the Pacific theater. It’s all here: Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, island hopping warfare, geishas, evil Japanese scientific experiments, shark attacks on stranded sailors, and Tuskegee. But, you know, with zombies.

FUBAR is a zombie anthology with a twist. The stories take place during World War II. The conflict and tension of war is only heightened when legions of undead monsters are thrown into the mix. This unique backdrop also proves to be a wellspring of creativity, as evidenced by the great stories being told in this collection.
There are so many interesting tales in this collection, and I wish that I could mention them all. A few stories that I really enjoyed were “Bearer of Secrets”, about a Jewish executioner, a concentration camp prisoner, and a German soldier forced to work together to escape the zombie threat. In “If God be for Us”, an American priest has a deadly encounter with zombified American soldiers. “Stalemate” is another unique story about American and German soldiers making their final stand against the Germans in a fortified bunker. In “De Guer”, two Dutch men send a blind boy out into the field to evade the zombies and help them gain their freedom. “Golem’s Last Stand” is another fascinating story about a Jewish girl who uses a dying American soldier in a very special way to destroy the zombie soldiers intent on eating her and her family. In all of these tales and the others in the book, you can feel the anguish and frustration of the humans already caught up in the grips of war and now being forced to contend with the presence of zombies.

Ghoulish news, horror comic geeks! Independent comic publisher Chimaera Comics has formally announced the creation of a new horror imprint. The horror line has been aptly named Nightmaera and has announced half a dozen forthcoming titles, including A Violent End and Happy Panda Funtime Show.
The next bit of info actually gets me a little vaklempt, but as good as news of as a bunch of new horror comics is to a geek like me, equally amazing news is that Chimaera made the genius move of naming one of Geeks of Doom’s favorite independent comic writers and advocate, Stephen Lindsay (Jesus Hates Zombies, Ham & Eggs) as Nightmaera’s editor-in-chief. I’ve been a huge fan of Lindsay’s work since the moment I stumbled upon it on ComicSpace a few years back and I couldn’t think of a better choice to undertake a project like this. Lindsay has proven his mettle time and again and I, for one, am really looking forward to the stillborn two-headed mongrel thing that will be birthed from the loins of a dead ghoul.. uh, I mean… looking forward to checking out what a Lindsay-guided Nightmaera Comics will bring to the horror comic genre.
Check out all the details in the official press release after the jump:
