Upon receiving my copy of Dorothy Of Oz Prequel #1, aside from obviously having a connection to The Wizard Of Oz, I was thinking of how this title sounded really familiar. Then I remembered that we covered the panel at last summer’s San Diego Comic-Con for the upcoming animated film Dorothy Of Oz, which has a great voice cast with actors like Patrick Stewart, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, and Kelsey Grammer. The animated film is based on the book of the same name by writer Roger S. Baum, who’s the great-grandson of original Oz creator L. Frank Baum.

In the animated film, everyone’s favorite gal from Kansas, the young Dorothy, returns home to her tornado-ravaged town after her magical journey to Oz and then finds a way to make it back to Oz. Dorothy Of Oz Prequel, which is the first installment in a four-issue miniseries from IDW Publishing, is a prelude to the events of the film and tells the tale of what happened in Oz after Dorothy left, which makes it necessary for her to return.

SDCC 2011: Dorothy of Oz panel: Sir Patrick StewartDorothy of Oz is a new CGI animated musical from Summertime Entertainment, due out in 2012. The panel began with a clip reel composed of a few finished scenes combined with concept art. The montage showed off some of the impressive voice talent such as Glee’s Lea Michele (as Dorothy herself), Wicked‘s Megan Hilty, Dan Aykroyd, Oliver Platt, Martin Short, Kelsey Grammer, Jim Belushi, Hugh Dancy, and Sir Patrick Stewart.

Panelists included producers Bonne Radford & Ryan Carroll, composer Debra Lurie, writer Roger Baum (grandson of original Oz creator L. Frank Baum) and voice actors Megan Hilty & Sir Patrick Stewart, in his first Comic–Con appearance.

The Movie God   |  @   |

We know a swarm of new Wizard of Oz-related films are currently in the works. There’s the one that Sam Raimi is said to be directing called Oz: The Great and Powerful, a couple of other scripts being looked at by various studios including an adaption of the Broadway hit Wicked over at Universal, and this computer animated sequel called Dorothy of Oz.

A really well-done new live-action adventure in Oz could be really exciting, though not easy to pull off as you saw with the recent Alice in Wonderland attempt. An animated film such as this won’t be quite as buzz-worthy as it moves forward, but might very well be worth a peek when it gets here. And to help you get a feel for where they’re heading with the movie, a bunch of character sketches next to the actors voicing them have been released, as well as some concept art of their computer animated Oz.

You can click your heels all you like, but only clicking over with lead you to the images and a synopsis of Dorothy of Oz!
