When DC relaunched their books last year with the New 52, there were a number of books that I decided to drop. One of those books was Green Lantern. I just wasn’t enjoying it anymore, so it did not make the cut. However, when the chance came to read the first trade of the new series, Green Lantern: Sinestro, I decided I would take a chance on it. I had heard that the book had improved, and I’m here to say that it has. Green Lantern is a good book again, and if you dropped it like I did, you would be remiss in picking up the first trade.

The first thing to know about the story is that most of the multi-colored Lanterns are gone. Sure, the Yellow Lanterns play a big role in the story, but merely as the antagonists, which is what they should be. The story focuses on the main Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, and his relationship with Sinestro. Hal has been stripped of his ring, and Sinestro has been re-admitted into the GL Corps, which makes no one happy. Hal’s life sucks on Earth, what with the no superpowers, and getting evicted, and not owning a car. Sinestro shows up to offer Hal a chance at redemption, and shortly the two are off to save Sinestro’s home planet.

I’m constantly amazed when comics publishers re-release material originally published by a different company. Such is the case with The Complete Major Bummer Super Slacktacular from Dark Horse Comics. Major Bummer was originally published by DC Comics from 1997 to 1998, lasting just 15 issues. The series was written by John Arcudi (BPRD, The Mask), with art by Doug Mahnke (Green Lantern, also The Mask). Major Bummer was released at a time when DC was experimenting with different kinds of books (see also: Young Heroes in Love) and is a title that you would never see from them today. It’s very cool to look back and see books created when DC and Marvel were more willing to take a chance on books that take the superhero genre in new directions, which is what we get from Major Bummer.

Green Lantern #65
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Doug Mahnke
Cover by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert
DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 20, 2011

One of the biggest events in DC Comics has come with the brand new War of the Green Lanterns story which is pitting Green Lanterns against each other. Part five of this epic event lands in Green Lantern #65 in which we see Guy, John, Kyle, and Hal without their rings and donning new rings to try and bring down the renegade guardian Krona who has taken over Oa and returned Parallax to the giant battery and made the rest of the guardians hosts for the other Lantern entities he has stolen.

This issue shows Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner flying a “suped” up shuttle from a Lantern safehouse to OA in order to find Kyle and John who are being tracked by the “infected” corps. This issue feels like a great buddy cop movie but set in space. The end of the book shows Kyle, Hal, John and Guy wearing other Corps rings to stop Krona.
