TV Review: Daredevil Season 2 Episode 13 (Finale)

Marvel’s Daredevil
Season 2 Episode 13
Created by Drew Goddard
Starring Charlie Cox, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Elodie Yung
Netflix
Premiere date: Friday, March 18th, 2016

So much has happened so far in Daredevil. I feel like Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride; “Let me explain, no there is no time, let me sum up.” Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) accidentally figured out who The Blacksmith was, Frank’s former Colonel Ray Schoonover (Clancy Brown), but Frank (Jon Bernthal) interceded and followed his teacher’s advice, “one shot, one kill.” After dispatching him, he found a cache of military grade weaponry that reminded me of the wonderful scene in The Boondock Saints where the brothers arm themselves. Elektra (Elodie Yung) has been marked by Nobu (Peter Shinkoda) as the leader of The Hand; a job she resists by helping Daredevil and Stick fight them off. It’s time for the conclusion to season 2 of Daredevil, which is like the Super Bowl in that it’s exciting but there’s a sense of melancholy that after this, something you love will be gone for long time…

Spoilers below for the season finale of Daredevil

This season… just unreal. I can’t think of a show outside of Dexter seasons 1-4 where every episode is better than the last. After the first half of the season, Daredevil had the hallway/staircase fight, the introduction of the incredibly sexy Elektra (Elodie Yung), and the balls to the wall insanity of Frank “the Punisher” Castle (Jon Bernthal). The second half of the season has more than kept up. The Hand has taken over as the primary villainous force, and Vincent D’Onofrio is back as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk. And since season 2 has been stealing the thunder, all the greatest hits from season 1 are returning – Stick (Scott Glenn); Daredevil’s blind trainer, and Nobu, the ninja that nearly killed Matt last season. My mouth has continuously hit the floor, and I’m so close to the end that I’m starting to get upset at the thought of waiting a year for season 3.

Finally, Marvel returns to Netflix with Season 2 of Daredevil. Debuting last year, the 13-episode series, uploaded all at once on the streaming site, put to death terrible memories of the unimpressive Ben Affleck film version. The new Daredevil (Charlie Cox), is blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who along with his best buddy Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and victim turned associate Karen (Deborah Ann Woll), run a law firm to help the underprivileged in Hell’s Kitchen. Murdock was blinded as a boy and the chemicals that blinded him also enhanced his other senses to the extreme. After a season long battle with Mob “Kingpin” Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), Murdock finally went from blindfolded ninja costume to the red suited Man With No Fear himself in the season finale. The series received rave reviews from critics and fans and with the series being on Netflix it was allowed to take its time over the 13-episodes whereas a film is forced to squeeze everything into 90-120 minutes. The show’s success launched a future Marvel Netflix empire, as Jessica Jones starring Krysten Ritter was already a huge hit last year, and there are other series slated such as Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The storyline going into season 2 of Daredevil is, who will take over Wilson Fisk’s spot as top crime boss?

Spoilers for the first three episodes below.
