Drew Goddard‘s Sinister Six and Venom were just a couple of the Amazing Spider-Man spinoff films that Sony was hoping to release to launch their Spider-Man shared universe. However, after two films failed to meet expectations, the studio made an unprecedented move, they made a deal with their studio rivals, Marvel/Disney, to share the character, and allow the webslinger to play in their sandbox.

The deal effectively killed Sony’s plans for their single Marvel character universe, which was a relief to some, leaving Goddard’s script to sit on a shelf. But the Daredevil Netflix series creator wrote the spinoff in such a way where it can stand on its own and not worry about “mythology or continuity,” and now he is talking about how he hopes that the film still could happen. Before the entire Amazing Spider-Man universe fell apart, Drew Goddard was tapped to write and direct a spinoff centered on the Sinister Six. Then when Sony cancelled their plans for their universe and started to share Spider-Man with Marvel Studios, there were rumors that Goddard’s script would be revamped to fit the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it was confirmed that Jon Watts (Cop Car) would direct using a script written by Vacation scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

And even though Goddard’s script won’t be used, he is still very much involved with other Marvel Studio-related projects. One of them being Daredevil. As the executive producer, Goddard wrote and directed the first two episodes of the Netflix series. Now a consultant for the show, Goddard has moved on to bigger projects like The Martian, which he is currently promoting at the Toronto International Film Festival. Every day now appears to bear news regarding Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Spider-Man reboot, which might be titled either The Spectacular Spider-Man or Spider-Man: The New Avenger, and is rumored take place during Peter Parker’s high school years. The title role has yet to be cast, but the front-runners reportedly include Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Timothée Chalamet, and Liam James.

Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) supposedly had been the studios’ top choice to write and direct the reboot, but recently a list of possible directors up for the job was released by Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. and Goddard’s name is nowhere to be found. Instead it appears as if Marvel and Sony are on the hunt for someone who will bring a lighter touch to the proceedings because the list features the likes of Jonathan Levine, Jared Hess, Jason Moore, Theodore Melfi, and the team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

In February, Sony announced that it would share Spider-Man with their rivals, Marvel Studios. Though Sony would still retain the rights and creative control, it meant that the webslinger could be seen alongside heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc. The deal also says that Marvel won’t pay Sony anything to use the character in their cinematic universe, such as The Avengers movies or Captain America: Civil War, and neither Sony nor Marvel will take a cut of the other studios’ projects involving Spider-Man.

It is expected that Spider-Man may make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War. If that is the plan, then casting should be underway since the Captain America sequel is expected to begin filming as soon as the Avengers: Age of Ultron press tour is complete. Dylan O’Brien and Logan Lerman were rumored to be in the running at one point in time, and it was even reported that the reboot may have Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. But Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirms that the new Spider-Man reboot will focus on Parker and that it won’t be an origins story.

Three weeks ago, fans of the Spider-Man franchise who were less than enthused by its recent entries breathed a sigh of relief when the news broke that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios had finally worked out a deal that would allow for Peter Parker and his iconic super alter ego to appear in one of the upcoming features from Marvel as well as headline a new film that Marvel and Sony would co-produce. The deal was major enough to impact Marvel’s Phase Three release schedule, with four movies getting their release dates pushed back.
