Holiday Geek Gift Guide 2011: Batman Edition
  |

Put on your capes and cowls, everybody! There’s pine needles on the living room floor, snow on the ground, and a scent of cinnamon in the air. Your dogs and cats are tearing apart wrapping paper, your family’s in town and you can’t stop drinking sparkling cider for some reason. That could only mean one thing, folks, it’s the nondescript religious holiday season! And that means that it’s time to go into credit card debt so that you can show those closest to you that you care, you know? And to make it a little bit easier on you guys, we here at Geeks of Doom have been shoveling our driveways so that we can deliver to you this, The Holiday Geek Gift Guide – Batman Edition! The best bat-gifts possible for the geeks on you gift-giving list!

As you can see, I’ve changed up the intro a smidge, and that’s simply because today we celebrate the holiday in the best way possible, with The Batman. Yes, The Batman. And while it may not make much sense to you that we’re doing this, you fail to realize that Batman makes everything better. In fact, the presence of Batman-centric holiday gift guide on this site makes not only this site better, but also it makes the world better. And isn’t that truly what the holidays are about? Making things better or something like that? Sure, why not! Anyway, it’s been a pretty big year for The Dark Knight, and that will certainly be evidenced by the majority of this list. We’ll also be making it a little easier on you by narrowing this list down by separate topics such as comics (and comic-inspired items), statues, Batman: Year One, and Arkham City. Sure there will be some overlap, but that’s all right because we’re talking about Batman! So let’s start of with the merriest of merries, comic books!

The GoD List: Comics For November 16, 2011
  |

Each and every week “The Guy That Won’t Stop Tweeting About Felicity” MK2Fac3 and “Give Me An O!” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of November 16, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Okay, so Felicity is a really great show, you guys. It’s about a college-aged girl’s growth as a person when she goes to college in New York City, a long way away from her hometown of Palo Alto, California. In my humble opinion, it’s the spiritual follow up to one of my favorite shows of all time, My So-Called Life. I’m still in the first season, but I can’t stop watching it, nor can I stop talking about it. Hence, what I’m writing right now. It’s a J.J. Abrams show, and you can absolutely tell. It’s not science fiction, but there’s a lot of fun to be had. Also, it’s streaming on Netflix Instant Watch, so you should totally check it out. Oh wait, I’m not reviewing Felicity? I’m supposed to be talking about comics? This is The GoD List! Well, let’s get to it!

Book Review: Fun & Games
  |

Fun & Games
By Duane Swierczynski
Paperback | Kindle
Mulholland Books
Release date: June 20, 2011

In Fun & Games, a former cop named Charlie Hardie, has taken a new job as a professional house sitter. His latest job in Los Angeles goes completely wrong when a movie actress finds refuge in the house that Hardie is protecting. The actress, Lane Madden, claims that a group of hit men are determined to kill her and Hardie finds himself thrown into the mix to protect her from them.

Fun & Games, the first book of the Charlie Hardie trilogy, was the one book that I was really looking forward to reading. I’m a fan of crime and thriller genres so this was a fantastic book to read. The book read like an action movie on steroids. Every chapter was a cliffhanger and I thought that there was no way Hardie could make it out of these situations alive. Boy was I wrong. Author Duane Swierczynski writes this novel the way I wish most action movies would come across: fast-paced, surprises left and right, and an ending that makes you excited for a sequel. The novel felt like a mash up of Home Alone meets Die Hard.

Comic Review: Deadpool: Wade Wilson’s War #1
  |

Wade Wilson’s War #1 (of 4)
Written by: Duane Swierczynski
Art by: Jason Pearson
Marvel
Price: $3.99
Release Date: June 9, 2010

Well Deadpool fans, here is another treat for you, a Marvel Knights miniseries. In Deadpool Wade Wilson’s War we are thrown head first into an ongoing Senate trial where Deadpool is testifying what led to a massacre killing hundreds. The story set up is quite interesting since you already pretty much know the outcome, which leads me to believe there is going to be some sort of twist.

Duane Swierczynski definitely understands how to utilize Deadpool to his strengths which leads to comedy gold. I really love that he narrates the flashbacks and the people in them can hear him doing it and are weirded out by it. He even tells them he is doing it for a Senate hearing that won’t even happen until their mission is over. I definitely enjoyed the cast of characters Swierczynski uses in this story from Bullseye to SIlver Sable to Domino, they are all highly enjoyable.
