Damage Control

ABC and Marvel Studios are developing yet another series based on a classic Marvel property, but it won’t be a action-drama like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Agent Carter. They’re going in a much different direction for this new show.

According to Variety’s Elizabeth Wagmeister, the network has recently purchased a script for a half-hour, single-camera comedy series based on Marvel’s Damage Control comic series. Created by writer Dwayne McDuffie (who pitched the idea to Marvel as “a sitcom within the Marvel Universe”) and artist Ernie Colón, Damage Control first appeared in the pages of 1988’s Marvel Age Annual and the May 1989 issue of Marvel Comics Presents before graduating to a comic title of its very own the same year. It told the story of the construction crew tasked with cleaning up and rebuilding after a major superhuman battle in the Marvel Universe.

Each week, MK2Fac3 and Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull list, grab some issues and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of June 1, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Apparently, I took all the comics that MK2Fac3 wanted to talk about this week, which I can’t be held responsible for, so you fine readers will get an extra helping of my suggestions. I hope you enjoy.

ISSUES

Criminal: Last of the Innocent #1 (Marvel/Icon – $3.99): I’m very excited that Ed Brubaker and Sean PhillipsCriminal is back with a new story. Criminal is consistently one of the best books on the market and it’s a shame that more people don’t give this book a shot. Every story arc is a self-contained story, but Brubaker also has created a universe where all of the stories exist and long-term readers are rewarded with Easter Eggs showing how the stories are connected. The art by Sean Phillips sets the perfect mood for this series and always impresses. If you’ve been reading Brubaker and Phillips’ Incognito but haven’t been reading Criminal, it’s time to jump on board. And if you haven’t been reading Criminal or Incognito, well then you have a lot of reading to do.

Comics and cartoon writer Dwayne McDuffie, who most recently penned the script for the DC Animated feature All-Star Superman, passed away from complications from a surgical procedure he had on Monday.

McDuffie got his start in comics as a member of Marvel’s editorial staff in the 1980s. While an editor at Marvel, McDuffie began writing the Damage Control miniseries and helped to revamp the Deathlok character. Eventually, McDuffie began writing full-time and would help create the Milestone comics universe at DC. Milestone was a separate line that featured minority heroes such as Static, Hardware, and Icon. In recent years, McDuffie began writing for cartoons as well, including a cartoon adaptation of his Static character, Static Shock. He also served as the story editor on the immensely popular Justice League Unlimited cartoon and a writer on Ben 10: Alien Force. McDuffie also wrote the DC Comics straight-to-DVD animated feature Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, as well as an adaptation of All-Star Superman that was released on DVD and Blu-ray today.

All-Star Superman Blu-ray DVDA lot of comic fans have been looking forward to the next DC Universe Animated Feature, All-Star Superman, and now they have a date to look forward to. It was announced that the DVD and Blu-ray will be released on February 22, 2011. We also got a look at the cover which doesn’t look like it was actually done by Frank Quietly, artist of the comic series the movie is based on, but it does look very similar to his style.

See the cover art here at right.

All-Star Superman is as I said, based on the comic of the same name, written by Grant Morrison with art by Quietly. The story follows a dying Superman as he faces his last days and has one last battle with Lex Luthor. The comic is one of the best series of the last few years, and it will be interesting to see how the unique story is translated into a 70-minute movie.

The movie is executive produced by Bruce Timm (mastermind of the DC animated universe), directed by Sam Liu (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) and written by Dwayne McDuffie (also Crisis on Two Earths, as well as a bunch of Justice League Unlimited episodes). The movie features James Denton as Superman, Christina Hendricks as Lois Lane, and Anthony LaPaglia as Lex Luther.
