I’ve been waiting YEARS for Big Trouble in Little China #1, and the wait is finally over!!! Can this comic possibly live up to years and years of anticipation? Let’s take a look..

I’ve never read an Eric Powell comic, but if the rest of them are half as entertaining as this book is, I’m going to start. From a story by him and John Carpenter (director of the 1986 film), Powell brings back every man’s favorite every man, Jack Burton (played by Kurt Russell in the film). The book takes place about 5 minutes after the movie ends, and Powell shows us that the movie wasn’t really a special event for Jack Burton, it was just another day in his life.

Evil Empire #1 cover by Jay ShawEvil Empire #1
Written by Max Bemis
Art by Ransom Getty
Color by Christ Blythe
Letters by Ed Dukeshire
Cover by Jay Shaw
BOOM! Studios
Release Date: March 5, 2014
Cover Price: $3.99

As a huge fan of post-apocalyptic stories, I’m always pining for the next Walking Dead or Jericho that’ll satisfy my primal curiosities about a world where the material comforts of modern suburbia have been ripped away. Enter writer Max Bemis’ new series Evil Empire. Perhaps my expectations of fire and brimstone were misplaced; what we get is more TMZ than DMZ. And, yet, that’s not a bad thing.

Evil Empire follows the rise of a totalitarian regime in a near-future America. Reese is a rap star whose politically charged lyrics brand her as a lone, dissenting salmon swimming against the rip tide of political conformity. Just as Reese scoffs at a vacuous political commercial, the star of the ad, Sam Duggins, makes a surprise appearance backstage. The aspiring politician seeks to tap into the energy of Reese’s fanbase by befriending her and, presumably, winning her endorsement. After some hokey cardboard cheesing that’s typical of a big-name politician, Duggins intrigues Reese enough to win her reluctant attention.

Written by Jason Starr
Illustrated by Andrea Mutti
Colored by Vladimir Popov

Cover by Frazier Irving
Boom! Studios
Release Date: March 12, 2014
Cover Price: $3.99

It’s no secret that modern readers still enjoy zombie tales. You know, mindless undead shambling around with their next meal their only priority? (The zombies, not the readers!) Jason Starr shakes up this well-established genre and steers it in a new direction with The Returning from Boom! Studios.

Instead of falling victim to a viral outbreak or the after effects of a passing comet, the undead of The Returning are everyday people who experience near death experiences (NDE) and are then resuscitated. This common occurrence somehow changes the person’s psyche and makes them prone to extreme acts of violence””they are then labeled as one of the Changed. Our protagonist, Beth, awakens from a coma following a car accident and finds that, even though she feels the same as before, her life is suddenly turned upside down because of the NDE she experienced.

Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm #5 is an interesting comic. Interesting, but not awesome. If you’re a Planet of the Apes fan, then you’re really going to like it. If not, it’s pretty much just an average book.

Writers Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman turn in a fine story, but honestly, if you’re not a fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise, it’s really not going to hold your interest. This is the first issue of this comic that I’ve read, and I feel no desire to go back and read the previous issues. Maybe the next time they start a new mini-series, I’ll take a look, but this comic is too far steeped in its continuity for me to really care. Now, I’m not being harsh on the writers, this comic just wasn’t for me. If I remove that from the situation, this is a very solid comic. It’s got some solid writing, it moves the story forward, there’s some shocks and surprises and some good action. So, if you’re all ready a reader of this title, you’re going to really enjoy it.

A few years ago, a circle of five friends attend Comic-Con International: San Diego, nickname themselves ‘The Wrecking Crew 4 Lyfe,’ and vow to return every year together. Flash forward to today, they’ve all come to the Con but jealousy and competitiveness have torn them into factions. All of a sudden, folks that thought they were suffering from Con-rot, that feeling of weariness and nausea most of us have when we’ve spent way to much time on the floor of a Con, have become flesh-eating zombies.

By the time we get to Fanboys vs. Zombies #2 the Wrecking Crew 4 Lyfe are among the few survivors left at Comic-Con. Now one of our heroes, Rob, is fixated solely on rescuing a celebrity crush. On top of that, the convention center has been rigged as a disaster relief center, built to withstand bombs and hurricanes, trapping them inside. And worst of all, they’re facing off against a horde of zombie D&D Cosplayers.
