Elvis Presley

It’s been 35, let me write that again, 35 years since Elvis Presley, the rightfully named “King of Rock and Roll,” passed away. For many musicphiles, zealous fans of him, and many of your rock and roll heroes who followed him and absolutely thought the man was musically irresistible, this is certainly a memorable day in the history of American music.

While the legacy and history of Elvis Presley is divided miles wide between those that love him and those that loathe him, one thing remains absolutely clear: the rules set and invented by the early Elvis, the brylcreemed, snarled lipped, leather jacket juvenile delinquent who had barely gotten out of his teenage years when he went into famed Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee and started his recording career, remains the checkpoint for all that followed him.

Elvis Presley

Looks like a hunka hunka burning hologram is headed to various forms of media soon. The next late figure (victim?) to be lined up ala Tupac with this disturbing and headshaking new trend of resurrecting dead icons via holographic images is the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley.

Yahoo news reports that Digital Domain Media Group announced today that it has gotten the greenlight from the Presley estate to create a hologram of the iconic musical legend for television, films, shows, and other projects worldwide, including appearances as well. No further details have been mentioned, but the mind boggles at the campy possibilities of this, Elvis side by side with Tom Jones perhaps? A guest appearance on True Blood*? One of The Three Stooges if they make a theatrical sequel? The list of opportunities is endless.

Playlist: The Very Best Of Elvis Presley

As part of Amazon’s monthly $5 MP3 album deal for April 2012, Playlist: The Very Best Of Elvis Presley is on sale for only $5.

The saga and adoration of Elvis Presley brings on a division among people that gives new meaning to the word love/hate. But make no mistake about a few points here, Elvis Presley may not have invented rock and roll and he may not invented rockabilly, but what he almost singlehandedly DID invent was how to project a certain attitude and style to it, infusing a danger and an edge. Nobody, no front man in music history who has followed him, does not owe at least something to the unpredictability of the swagger and charisma that was the early Elvis Presley, from Iggy Pop, to John Lennon, to Jim Morrison, to Robert Plant and up and down the musical ladder.

Danzig Recording A Covers Album

Glenn DanzigGlenn Danzig has announced that he is in the studio and currently recording a covers album. Fans of Danzig will know this project is one the artist has been talking about for some time, and five songs have already been recorded for the album. While Danzig hasn’t released full details yet, it’s understood that among the song selections will be tributes to Black Sabbath and Elvis Presley.

While the Sabbath and Elvis selections, I believe, are somewhat “predictable” choices for Danzig (I imagine he’ll probably throw a song by The Doors in there somewhere too), I would like to think he will choose some tracks that might be a surprise for his fans. I could imagine him doing an interesting interpretation of Nick Cave‘s “Red Right Hand” or a classic rock song like “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals.

This is all just speculation on my part of course, but as a fan I’d like to see Danzig tackle some covers that are a little more unpredictable. Either way, it will be interesting to see what Glenn comes up with for this project. Maybe he could include a hidden track of him paying tribute to the “Glenn Danzig Shopping List” :)
