When Fallout 76 was released last November, it was met with overwhelming negativity. And though I was a definitely bummed out that my favorite developer had chosen to not only make back to back Fallout games instead of moving on to upcoming games Starfield and, more importantly, The Elder Scrolls VI after Fallout 4, but make an online multiplayer Fallout game instead of focusing on the single-player RPGs they’re so darn good at creating, I still didn’t hate the game like so many others did.

But despite the negativity, Bethesda has pushed forward. And for their annual showcase at E3 2019, they announced some big additions coming to Fallout 76. The first is a free update called “Wastelanders,” which brings human NPCs and branching dialogue to the game; while the second is “Nuclear Winter,” a free 52-player Battle Royale mode.

For those of you who are still playing, interested in eventually playing, or open to returning to Fallout 76 at some point, a free new update titled “Wild Appalachia” has been released.

The update features a new questline which is tied to a new crafting workbench which allows you to brew and distill various adult beverages including the new Nukashine, other new upcoming quests, survival mode, and more.

I waited a long time to play Fallout 76. And when I say that, I don’t mean that I waited a long time for the game to be released so that I could finally play. I mean that instead of diving right in when the game was released, I waited and waited, at least a couple of weeks, before finally loading it up with eyes closed and breath held.

This, of course, is due to the response people have had toward the game. Beginning with the Beta and continuing into the final product’s release, the response has been overwhelmingly negative. So negative, in fact, that it’s been…well, shocking, to say the least. How could a game set in such a beloved world and made by such a beloved developer be so aggressively loathed?

But I couldn’t ignore Fallout 76 forever—as much as I sometimes wished I could (if I don’t play it, it won’t let me down)—so it was time for me wander cautiously into a new wasteland and see for myself what kind of devastation lie waiting for me on the other side.

Bethesda has released a series of Fallout 76 holotape recordings titled “Tales from the West Virginia Hills.”

The series is a collection of stories about things like Wendigo, Mothman, and more presented in an old radio show style, similar to the Silver Shroud radio show heard in Fallout 4. You can read more about each of the five episodes and give them a listen below.

Bethesda Softworks has released a live-action trailer for their next title, Fallout 76, the brand new game in the series set in a massive online world shared with other players.
