DC Comics Goes Steampunk In February With ‘New 52’ Variant Covers
  |

In February 2014, DC Comics will be bringing the increasingly popular sci-fi subgenre, steampunk, to their New 52 lineup in the form of variant covers. The covers will span their most popular titles from Action Comics and Batman to Justice League and Wonder Woman. A collection of artists including Dave Johnson and Klaus Janson will be providing the covers.

The covers will feature all the trademarks of steampunk, which is a sci-fi subgenre that is generally set in an alternate Victorian era where steam and clockwork have become the predominant technology. These covers feature it all – from dirigibles and steam-powered machines to cog-driven robots and brass button covered apparel. So, so many brass buttons!

You can check out the full list of comics getting these variant covers and their artists below, along with previews of the covers.

‘The Flash’ To Get Standalone Pilot With The CW; Costume Won’t Debut On ‘Arrow’
  |  @   |

The CW’s plan to expand the DC Universe originally was supposed involve Barry Allen aka The Flash being introduced in their series Arrow for several episodes, with the last of these serving as a backdoor pilot that would eventually lead to a full series order of The Flash television series.

Now, those plans have been scrapped, but not because The CW doesn’t like what they see in the speedy superhero, but rather because they have full confidence in The Flash. The network will forgoing the backdoor pilot, giving the hero his own pilot instead. This move is based on the reactions the CW has been getting about the character.

DC Comics Speedster The Flash To Join Green Arrow With New CW TV Show
  |  @   |

From Batman and Superman to Wonder Woman and Shazam and even the short-lived Human Target, Aquaman, and Birds of Prey, DC Comics have seen much more success putting their heroes on the small screen than their competitor Marvel Comics – although that might change when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuts this fall. With Arrow making huge waves and getting ready for its second season, new heroes with DC roots were bound to have their own shows as well.

It’s being reported that the CW network is fast tracking Flash, a series based on the speedy superhero from Arrow team of co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and director David Nutter.

WonderCon 2011 Video: Ryan Reynolds Talks Green Lantern, Flash & Deadpool Movies
  |

Star of the upcoming Green Lantern film Ryan Reynolds said he was pretty damn impressed with the footage showed off at this year’s WonderCon after being in a skin tight blue suit that didn’t breath well in Louisiana. [For details on that footage, read: WonderCon 2011: Ryan Reynolds Shows Off New “˜Green Lantern’ Footage and Watch Now: 4 Minutes Of New “˜Green Lantern’ Footage]

It was a fun panel filled with lots of banter between Reynolds and the audience. He joked with the fans about reading Green Lantern comics for inspiration, saying if he hadn’t at this point the fans would have run him out of the convention center in an angry mob — and then seemed disappointed that the crowd was slow to chant the Green Lantern oath with him, stopping midway through to reveal that the “front row just bombed it.”

“I was going to come out here and tell everyone I was cast a the lead in a new Flash movie since it’s April Fools Day,” Reynolds said, adding that he’d likely “be systematically murdered” if he played another super-character. And since he wouldn’t be playing Barry Allen, he suggested the role for Bradley Cooper, which got a mixed reaction from the crowd.

Warner Brothers Signs Writers for ‘Green Lantern 2’ and ‘The Flash’
  |

That’s right you heard correctly, even though Green Lantern hasn’t even had a proper teaser trailer yet DC Entertainment has already hired Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim to write a treatment for the sequel.

Not only will the three writers be writing the sequel to Green Lantern, which isn’t set to release until next year, but that they will also be writing a treatment for a Flash movie.

Is this all just an answer to Disney/Marvel’s plans to release multiple lower tier characters along with their already planned larger releases or is it a result of Geoff John‘s new position in DC Entertainment? Whatever the reason, I definitely think it is a good thing to see that DC is finally taking their live-action movies seriously and are releasing more than one Batman movie every year or two.
