The GoD List: Comics for June 1, 2011
  |  @   |

Each week, MK2Fac3 and Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull list, grab some issues and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of June 1, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Apparently, I took all the comics that MK2Fac3 wanted to talk about this week, which I can’t be held responsible for, so you fine readers will get an extra helping of my suggestions. I hope you enjoy.

ISSUES

Criminal: Last of the Innocent #1 (Marvel/Icon – $3.99): I’m very excited that Ed Brubaker and Sean PhillipsCriminal is back with a new story. Criminal is consistently one of the best books on the market and it’s a shame that more people don’t give this book a shot. Every story arc is a self-contained story, but Brubaker also has created a universe where all of the stories exist and long-term readers are rewarded with Easter Eggs showing how the stories are connected. The art by Sean Phillips sets the perfect mood for this series and always impresses. If you’ve been reading Brubaker and Phillips’ Incognito but haven’t been reading Criminal, it’s time to jump on board. And if you haven’t been reading Criminal or Incognito, well then you have a lot of reading to do.

Details On The Future Of The DCU To Be Revealed This June
  |

Earlier today, DC Comics announced that famed creators Jim Lee and Geoff Johns would be making a very special appearance at the Hero Complex Film Festival on Saturday, June 11, 2011. The two will participate in an interview session with Los Angeles Times journalist Geoff Boucher.

Their appearance will be followed by a tribute to Richard Donner, in which Superman and Superman II: The Donner Cut will be shown prior to a Q&A session with Donner himself.

That’s all well and good, but see below for the parts of DC’s statement that caught my attention.

DC’s Flashpoint World Map Sparks Controversy
  |

DC Comics posted a map of the world of Flashpoint today and the result… well, there’s some aspects of it that are a tad on the unfortunate side.

The now-controversial map breaks down different regions of the world showing who holds the power/threats in each area. For instance, The United Kingdom is now New Themyscira, Brazil is occupied by Nazis, Alaska is “The Land of The Undead,” and so on and so forth. The controversy, however, comes into play when you look at Africa, and the map simply claims that it’s now “Ape-Controlled.” Yep, Africa is listed as Ape-Controlled. To say that comes off as racist is a bit of an understatement, and it gets worse when you get to the fountain of creativity that is “Asian Capital,” which comes off poorly as well.

Check out the map here above and click for larger view.

Comic Review: Flashpoint #1
  |

Flashpoint #1
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Andy Kubert
Inks by Sandra Hope
Colors by Alex Sinclair
Lettering by Nick J. Napolitano
Price: $3.99
Release Date: May 11, 2011

The world has changed, and Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert are responsible.

Readers of Johns’ recent stint on The Flash know that a big story has been building centering around The Flash’s arch rival Professor Zoom, aka The Reverse Flash. Aged bodies have turned up dead, and it seems that Zoom has found a way to bring the past, present, and future all to one moment in time, and all we know is that this can prove to be extremely dangerous.

Flashpoint is DC’s big summertime event that focuses on a displaced Barry Allen in an unfamiliar world, and honestly, I felt like Barry Allen when I read this comic.

Spoilers abound below for Flashpoint #1 so proceed with caution.
