CONFIRMED: ‘Preacher’ TV Series From Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg Coming To AMC
  |  @   |

Back in November it was rumored that AMC had ordered a pilot for a potential new TV series based on the hit comic book Preacher from writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and that comedy tag team Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were involved in the project.

This news has now been confirmed, as it’s being reported that Rogen and Goldberg are in fact officially adapting Preacher for AMC, and that Breaking Bad executive producer, writer, and director Sam Catlin will act as the series showrunner.

AMC Orders Pilot For Vertigo Comic Series ‘Preacher’ – Can I Get An Amen?
  |

In less than a decade AMC has gone from being that channel that Turner Classic Movies was so much better at to having the market cornered on edgy and provocative original television programming that reaped the highest ratings on basic cable and set the online chat room water coolers ablaze with discussion and debate. With Breaking Bad having recently come to a close and the finale of Mad Men getting closer by the day, the network is going to need a new show in its bullpen to bring in the audiences and word of mouth that lackluster efforts like Rubicon, The Killing, and Low Winter Sun have failed at garnering. As they did with their Sunday night horror-drama blockbuster The Walking Dead, AMC is looking to the world of comics for inspiration.

The network is rumored to be ordering a pilot based on the DC/Vertigo comic series Preacher that writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon (with beautiful painted covers by Glenn Fabry) for 66 issues from 1995 to 2000. Five one-shot specials and a four-issue spin-off miniseries based on one of its antagonists were also published with scripts by Ennis and art by various collaborators.

Dynamite Comics’ new series, Red Team, is a classic “dirty cop” mini-series that focuses on a team of elite detectives. The Red Team was formed to deal with the worst of the worst criminals. Which eventually brings them to Clinton Days, a drug dealing, pimping, child pornograph-ing murderer. Days eluded and frustrated the team for almost two years with a mix of clean crimes and fancy lawyering. He finally pushes them too far by killing a cop. The group decides the only way to get Days off the streets is with some vigilante justice.

Writer Garth Ennis takes the Red Team down a slippery-slope storyline. The concept is a proven winner spawning well-regarded and highly rewatchable television series such as The Shield and movies like Training Day. Cops are bound by the law to bring criminals to justice, not justice to the criminals. But once this group crosses that line, they realize that they are phenomenally good at it and it won’t be the last time they murder somebody. However, we already know that the team screws up somewhere along the line: the core of the story occurs in an interrogation room.
