GI Joe: Retaliation PosterG.I. Joe: Retaliation
Directed by Jon M. Chu
Screenplay by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Ray Park, Bruce Willis
Paramount Pictures
Rated PG-13 | 110 Minutes
Release Date: March 28, 2013

Directed by Jon M. Chu (Step Up 3D), G.I. Joe: Retaliation is the sequel to Stephen Sommers’ instantly forgettable 2009 film, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

At the conclusion of that film, Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), having had his physical appearance altered by nanomites, infiltrates the White House and assumes the identity of the President of the United States of America (Jonathan Pryce).

Chu’s sequel begins with Zartan in control of the United States government. The master of make-up and disguise frames the G.I. Joes as traitors and launches an all-out attack on the Joes, wiping out their ranks (including Channing Tatum‘s Sgt. Duke) in one fell swoop.

Meanwhile, Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun) and Firefly (Ray Stevenson) infiltrate a top-secret subterranean prison to free Cobra Commander. Previously portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the supreme leader of COBRA is played by Australian actor Luke Bracey this time around and voiced by Robert Baker.

Cobra Commander’s plan is simple: eliminate the world’s stockpile of nuclear weapons so COBRA can rule the world unopposed by using Zeus, a sub-orbital weapon of mass destruction that’s twice as powerful as a nuclear bomb.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

A few years ago I, like many, wouldn’t have thought a second G.I. Joe movie to be a likelihood. While G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a spazztastic joy-bomb of a movie that bled pure, unadulterated fun from its pores, it wasn’t quite the moneymaker that Hasbro’s other big screen franchise brand, Transformers, had become. But after three years it looks like we’re getting a sequel to The Rise of Cobra, and not only does G.I. Joe: Retaliation look a lot better than its predecessor but it appears that director Jon M. Chu (Step Up 3D) and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), along with a mighty cast, have made a real-as-rhubarb G.I. Joe movie.

The movie isn’t due in theaters until this summer but in the past two months the studio has released a teaser trailer and Super Bowl spot that both garnered positive reaction, something that the early trailers for The Rise of Cobra couldn’t quite accomplish and thus hurt its chances at the box office.

Today Paramount Pictures and MGM have released an international trailer for the movie. You can watch it here below.

‘Die Hard’ Star Bruce Willis In Talks To Play Original Joe In ‘G.I. Joe 2’

The first G.I. Joe movie, The Rise of Cobra, was pretty awful. A lot of people seemed to like it for some inexplicable reason, but a guilty pleasure is a guilty pleasure, and that one is getting a sequel.

Interestingly enough, it appears that pretty much everyone who was in Rise of Cobra, won’t be in G.I. Joe 2, which is titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The only returning stars will be Channing Tatum, who plays Duke, the fan–favorite, Snake Eyes (played by Ray Park), and Byung-hun Lee, who plays Storm Shadow.

But, if all goes to plan, a massive Hollywood star will be one of the newcomers cast to try and help it survive the loss of talents like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid, and Rachel Nichols. It’s being reported that none other than Bruce Willis is in talks for a role, and it’s a fairly significant one at that.

Director Stephen Sommers To Return For ‘G.I. Joe 2’

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra obviously isn’t the best movie ever made, but a surprising amount of people ended up having a lot of fun with it, and the movie went on to pull in over $300 million worldwide at the box office.

After showing off numbers like that, a sequel was all but guaranteed and has been under development at Paramount Pictures. No movie can move forward without a director, of course, and it would appear that this sequel now has one. The Wrap has it on good authority that Stephen Sommers — director of the first movie — is set to return once again for G.I. Joe 2.

‘Zombieland’ Writers Also Taking On ‘G.I. Joe’ Sequel

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

The writing duo for popular Summer horror comedy Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are apparently the men of the moment. Just this past Tuesday, it was confirmed that the pair would be taking on the writing duties for the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool adaptation, which seems like a perfect match. Now comes word via an IESB scoop that Reese and Wernick will also be taking on the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

If this news pans out, the hiring is definitely not that match made in heaven for the writers like Deadpool is. G.I. Joe won a lot of people over who were expecting it to be unwatchable, but it also remained unwatchable to many others. In any scenario, it is a much cheesier and action-heavy project than Zombieland was or Deadpool is likely to be. This leads one to believe that it could be a “paycheck” job for these gentleman, which is fair and deserved. One thing is for sure, though: if they can add a little Zombieland good-ness to G.I. Joe, it might just take a big step up on the entertainment levels.
