Lionsgate has released a new trailer for their all-out epic film Gods of Egypt that will serve as their Super Bowl spot for the upcoming movie.

Watch Super Bowl spot titled “War” here below.

Gods of Egypt has Gerard Butler leading as the god of darkness Set, who’s usurped the Egyptian throne with aspirations to rule the world, although his style of leadership involves much chaos, conflict, and destruction. Game Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays Jaime Lannister on the HBO series) stars as Horus, is beheld as the only one who can say Egypt from Set’s tyranny.

Lionsgate Apologizes For Whitewashed ‘Gods Of Egypt’ Oversight
  |  @   |

By now, in 2015, you’d think that studios would have caught on to the idea that they would want to cast a film like Gods of Egypt with actors who are, I don’t know, Egyptian. Just so that the actors can properly reflect the ethnicity of that time period. But after seeing the first posters and trailer for the film, it’s no surprise that there was an uproar over the idea that headlining star Gerard Butler could even pass as a Egyptian. Let’s not forget that Nikola Coster-Waldau and Brenton Thwaites, who also star in this film, are both white as well.

As confusing as this may sound, the film still got made, and with the all the vitriol it’s already been getting with just the first trailer and posters alone because it is so whitewashed, director Alex Proyas and Lionsgate have come out to apologize for it. See what they had to say below.

‘Gods Of Egypt’ Trailer: Humans Against CGI Ancient Egypt Backdrop

Aesthetically, the first set of posters for Alex Proyas‘s Gods of Egypt did not look good, and obviously that should not be a representation of the film itself. Often times, it is though. But we should never let the look of posters cloud our judgement, even if this is a pretty white-washed film.

But holding out on the hopes that the film may be actually entertaining seems like a futile effort, especially since the look and feel of this new trailer gives off a wretched whiff of horribly bad CGI backdrops, with equally bad CG effects and even worse CG characters. Check out the full trailer for Gods of Egypt below.
