Gareth Edwards' Godzilla Poster

Last month we found out that Frank Darabont, the creator (and eventually fired showrunner) of AMC’s The Walking Dead and director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, would be rewriting the script for Legendary Pictures’ reboot of Godzilla.

Darabont is still working on said rewrite, but the studio is now starting to put its cast together. According to sources, Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston and Martha Marcy May Marlene star Elizabeth Olsen have entered into negotiations to join the cast. Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is also in talks for a role.

Gareth Edwards Godzilla

The Godzilla reboot is progressively coming along. The film, which is directed by Gareth Edwards, is due to hit theaters on May 16, 2014. But like most films in very early development, there are bound to be a few shakeups within the creative team.

First, Deadline reports that former Walking Dead writer Frank Darabont has been brought in to polish the draft penned by Max Borenstein (Seventh Son) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3).

Even though Darabont has been hired to polish the script, a feud between two departing producers and Legendary Pictures could possibly delay the film’s release.

Gareth Edwards Godzilla

Everyone was surprised to see that Warner Bros. presented a sizzle reel for Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla during San Diego Comic-Con in July. At that time film was still very much under early development. Screenwriters David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy), and Max Borenstein all contributed to the script, which the studio reportedly likes. Now Variety reports that Drew Pearce will be brought in to do the rewrites for Godzilla.

According to the report, Pearce’s writing will “age up” the characters in the script. Now the question is, how young were the characters originally? How much older will they be now that Pearce is writing it? If these characters were kids, it would certainly be an interesting aspect of a story, but it would also be difficult to market to an older audience.

Gareth Edwards Godzilla

Warner Bros. surprised Comic-Con attendees this earlier year with a very brief teaser trailer for Godzilla, and it was met with huge praise. Little is known about the film itself, but Gareth Edwards now has a scheduled date to keep.

WB has announced that the new Godzila reboot would be stomping into theaters in Summer 2014. According to the studio, the film will be a “grounded [and] realistic” take on everyone’s favorite walking skyscraper lizard.

Gareth Edwards Godzilla

The Warner Brothers panel today at the San Diego Comic-Con surprised the audience at Hall H with a sneak peek at WB/Legendary Pictures’ upcoming film, Godzilla, from director Gareth Edwards.

The brief test footage (the film hasn’t actually begun filming yet) started with some smoke and then showed a city that had been completely destroyed by something. As the trailer moved forward, the famous “I am become Death” speech by J. Robert Oppenheimer — “We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture… ‘Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.'” — played over the scenes of devastation, implying that the movie will use the effects of a nuclear bomb or something along those lines as the creator of Godzilla. In the middle of the footage, we see a multi-legged monster that has already been killed. Then, as the trailer comes to a close, we get a shot of a new design for Godzilla. The footage ends with the classic Godzilla scream.

New ‘Godzilla’ To Be Helmed By ‘Monsters’ Director Gareth Edwards

Director Gareth Edwards made quite the climb into the public eye in 2010, and he’s beginning 2011 off in epic fashion.

Edwards is know for making the indie alien invasion film, Monsters, which was produced with only a few people on the cast and crew, and with a tiny budget (though bigger than what was once said to be only around $15,000). The movie made the festival rounds and caught a lot of attention for its look and special effects on such a minuscule budget, and now Edwards is getting major attention from bigger studios.

It’s being reported that Edwards is set to lock up a deal with Legendary Pictures, the banner behind The Dark Knight, 300, and Inception, to direct their brand new re-imagining of classic movie beast, Godzilla. Legendary acquired the rights to the famed Japanese creature in 2010 and has since been putting things together with hopes of releasing their movie at some point in 2012. The hiring of Edwards is the first major ingredient, sure to be followed quickly with a writer and various castings.

Godzilla

We all know the story: Godzilla is one of the icons of monster movie history, and his many Japanese films are still popular to this very day. Our own silly Hollywood attempted to make a new re-imagined version of the giant lizard-beast back in 1998, and as you might be aware, it is still to this day the victim of many, many jokes.

To wash the slate clean and try and prove it can be done, Legendary Pictures has announced that they have partnered up with Japan’s Toho Company to produce another American Godzilla film. This comes as no major shock; back in August, Bloody-Disgusting had heard whispers of this very news being in the beginning stages of becoming a reality. Now we have confirmation, and Legendary hopes to find a director and get moving on the project relatively soon with plans for a release in 2012 currently set.

Rampage your way on over to the other side to read the press release from Legendary Pictures.
