‘Star Wars’: The Opinion Menace

Star Wars

It’s no mystery that when the Star Wars Prequels were released, opinions were divided. On one hand you had fans that seemed reasonably happy with the films, and on the other, you had a very vocal group of fans who despised the movies and believed them substandard to the Original Trilogy.

There’s been a lot of Star Wars buzz on the web lately. From the planned re-release of all six films (if they perform well) in 3D format, to the upcoming release of the films on Blu-Ray with deleted scenes and other bonus materials, to latest news bytes about the developing live-action series, it seems that there’s always stuff out there for Star Wars followers.

Unfortunately, when it comes to reporting a lot of Star Wars content, it seems that facts of projects or news as they come to light continue to get tainted by the negative opinion some writers have of the prequel trilogy.

Don’t get me wrong. You are welcome to have your opinion on the Star Wars prequels. I’m not saying that’s the problem.

‘Green Lantern’ Was Almost A Jack Black Comedy

Week of Geek: Green Lantern

Now that Green Lantern is playing theaters around the world, it’s become the biggest attempt to launch a DC Comics character whose name didn’t begin with Super or Bat on the big screen since 2004’s seriously misguided Catwoman. In a summer movie season crowded to the gills with everything from 3D swashbuckling to animated animals who also function as masters of kung fu, the concept of a superhero with a galaxy-spanning mythology whose power comes from a mighty ring is a risky proposition for a tentpole movie franchise.

But there was a time only a few years ago when the possibility of a reverential adaptation of the classic comic book character was so remote, the studio that owned the rights actually considered going in a radically different direction.

As early as 2004, New Line Cinema, flushed with revenue from the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and in possession of the Green Lantern movie rights, floated the idea of making a big-budget comedy loosely based on the character but more in the vein of the studio’s 1994 smash hit The Mask, which itself was an adaptation of a comic book series that was lighter in tone than its source material. When news of this turn in the development of the Green Lantern movie first broke, it was not well received, but the studio persisted in the idea and entered into discussions with Jack Black to play their version of the iconic hero.

Watch The First Official Trailer & ‘Green Lantern’ Parody From ‘The Muppets’

A couple of new trailers have been released for Disney’s The Muppets, including another parody trailer as well as the first full official trailer for the movie.

As far as parodies go a few have been released, the first of which was a bit strange but still amusing. This new one is a parody of the just-released DC Comics superhero movie, Green Lantern, with a voice over reciting the Lantern’s oath before revealing it’s actually for The Muppets. A poster to go with the spoof trailer has also been released, with Kermit the Frog as a Lantern.

Then comes the first official trailer for the movie, which sets up the actual storyline and dedicates the whole trailer to Muppet goodness. You can see both trailers and the Kermit Green Lantern poster by continuing on below now.

Spoiler Talk: Green Lantern

Week of Geek: Green Lantern

As far as mindless summer diversions go, Green Lantern isn’t that bad.

Had to pause before writing anything else because “isn’t that bad” is about as enthusiastic there is to get about Green Lantern. It’s a satisfactorily entertaining adaptation and one of the few movies whose FX are actually worth the gouge in price for a 3D viewing. In a world where 3D-ocrity rules, the visuals are such that it almost makes up for the substandard, bordering on generic, origin story. The most acutely negative thing I can write about the Green Lantern experience is that X-Men: First Class and Thor were released before it, perhaps setting the bar too high so that “adequate” is merely…adequate. At least you won’t be wondering why you bothered to pay for those worthless 3D glasses.

Time for some SPOILER TALK! Below are SPOILERS for Green Lantern. Feel free to add your thoughts in the Comments section.

Movie Review: Green Lantern

Green LanternGreen Lantern
Directed by Martin Campbell
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard
Release date: June 17, 2011

I went into Green Lantern expecting a solid summer action movie and that’s exactly what I got. Therefore, I don’t get a lot of the hatred directed towards this film. Critics have been giving this long-gestating DC comic book adaptation a regular blanket party and for most of the same reasons that those same critics spazzed out over Thor. Personally I’ve never been a fan of the character and outside of some episodes of Super Friends and the occasional glance at an issue of the comic, I don’t even know that much about the Green Lantern. After seeing the movie, it’s evident I have some catching up to do. Good thing I have access to some of his recent appearances in animated DTV movie form.

Green Lantern 101: A Crash Course In The Mythology and Characters

Week of Geek: Green Lantern

In honor of today’s release of Green Lantern, I thought I’d take the time to sit down with you all and give you a little crash course on the mythology, terminology, and characters of this film. There’s much more to the mythology than what I’m going to go over, and far too many characters for one post. So here’s your beginner’s guide, Green Lantern 101, which should get you familiar enough with everything in the movie, so you don’t leave thinking “Wait, what was that?”

Mythology – The Green Lantern mythos is based around the concept that the universe is overseen by little blue aliens called “The Guardians of The Universe” who created the Green Lantern Corps close to the beginning of time as a universal police force. The entire universe is split into sectors, and one Green Lantern is assigned to each sector as its protector. The Guardians home planet is called “Oa” and it serves as the training ground for new members of the Green Lantern Corps. Members of the Corps are known by their color-coordinated outfits of green, white, and black, and by their green magic wishing ring which gives them the power to create laser beams or constructs. They create this weaponry by simply willing it, so the Green Lantern’s power is almost limitless. But, if you see a guy in yellow with a yellow wishing ring, watch out. He’s the bad guy.

DC Entertainment/Warner Bros.
Release Date: June 8, 2011

DC’s animation department has done a terrific job with all of their animated features showcasing some of the biggest names in DC’s library, and the next film in this legacy is the anthology style film, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. When I popped this into my Blu-ray player, honestly, I wasn’t sure to expect. I’ve been a fan, overall, of the DC animated films and their adaptation of All-Star Superman was almost perfect, it captured the heart and story of the comic while also making things cohesive for the animated medium. All-Star Superman is probably my favorite of the films, but I had an emotional tie to that story, and while I’ve loved the majority of these animated titles, I can’t say the same about Green Lantern: First Flight, the least favorite out of all the features.

4 Trades To Read Before Seeing ‘Green Lantern’

Week of Geek: Green Lantern

Green Lantern hits theaters this weekend, but there’s still time to catch up on Hal Jordan’s adventures and all the numerous characters that inhabit his corner of the DC Universe before you see the film, which stars Ryan Reynolds in the title role.

Since the creation of the second Green Lantern in 1959, he’s gone on numerous adventures, died, been reborn, been replaced by three other characters, and fought Sinestro more than a few times. However, many of you may have never read any stories with him before, as I had until a few years ago. Where’s the best place to catch up, you may be asking. Well, here are four collections of Green Lantern stories that I recommend reading before you see the movie.
