DC Relaunch: September’s Green Lantern Covers

Week of Geek: Green Lantern

DC Comics released the official covers from the upcoming Green Lantern family of titles Monday, which you may have noticed were missing from their initial announcement. Although I’m not entirely sure why they withheld the covers, it is convenient that these were released the same week that the live-action Green Lantern film hits theaters. It’s also a great way for us to kick-off our Green Lantern Week of Geek!

In case you’ve forgotten, and I don’t see how that’s possible, these new covers and titles are a part of the relaunch initiative that DC Comics has planned for September, so if you’ll be going to see the new movie this weekend, make a note of the titles that you’re interested in here, because you’ll be able to start fresh with the comics in the Fall.

I’ve included the covers along with each of their solicitations, so check them out here below!

Fans of one of the top selling franchises of DC ComicsGreen Lantern can breathe a sigh of relief today, as the comic book publishing company has announced their line of Green Lantern titles that are coming in September, and things seem pretty interesting.

Green LanternFirst, we have the no-surprises title, Green Lantern #1. Not much information has been given with the exception of the creative team of Geoff Johns holding up his writing duties with art from Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy, with a cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. The interesting item here is that DC doesn’t give a name for the actual Green Lantern that will be the main focus of the title, but since we’ve seen Hal Jordan on the cover of Justice League #1, I suspect Hal Jordan will be the main man of this title.

Green Lantern posters 1 & 2

The marketing campaign for the upcoming Green Lantern movie started off sluggish late last year with an interesting but frustratingly earthbound teaser trailer. Now of course raising awareness of the Emerald Avenger’s big screen debut was always going to be a difficult task; the Green Lantern is one of the most iconic characters in all of the DC Universe, but he’s not on the same level of instant recognizability as his fellow DCU stalwarts Superman and Batman. A lot of lower-tiered DCU heroes and heroines have always had that problem, as the negative fan reaction to David E. Kelley’s failed Wonder Woman TV pilot most recently proved.

Not much is known about the plot of the Green Lantern movie except that it’s an origin story focusing on Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds, barely edging out Bradley Cooper for the coveted role) and it concerns an intergalactic threat known only as Parallax. Somehow it involves Blake Lively looking hot, a very David Crosby-looking Peter Sarsgaard turning into something that resembles the veiny-headed mutants from Beneath the Planet of the Apes, and lots and lots of aliens bearing power rings. Any studio would be understandably nervous.

Green Lantern, Issue #65Green Lantern #65
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Doug Mahnke
Cover by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert
DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 20, 2011

One of the biggest events in DC Comics has come with the brand new War of the Green Lanterns story which is pitting Green Lanterns against each other. Part five of this epic event lands in Green Lantern #65 in which we see Guy, John, Kyle, and Hal without their rings and donning new rings to try and bring down the renegade guardian Krona who has taken over Oa and returned Parallax to the giant battery and made the rest of the guardians hosts for the other Lantern entities he has stolen.

This issue shows Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner flying a “suped” up shuttle from a Lantern safehouse to OA in order to find Kyle and John who are being tracked by the “infected” corps. This issue feels like a great buddy cop movie but set in space. The end of the book shows Kyle, Hal, John and Guy wearing other Corps rings to stop Krona.

DC ComicsAt their big DC Nation panel WonderCon 2011 this weekend, DC Comics announced an exciting new series called Retro-Active. This series of one-shots will pair some of comics’ greatest writers with some of DC’s greatest heroes to create stories set in classic eras in comics. The stories will all be set during the ’70s, ’80’s, and ’90s eras. The stories will be impacted only by things that have happened previous to the writing, not after. So there will be stories prior to Earth-shattering events such as Crisis on Infinite Earths. Each issue will feature 26 all new story pages and a 20-page reprinted classic story and will sell for $4.99.

See below for a superheroes, the eras the stories are set, and writers.

Geeks of Doom Invades WonderCon 2011

Green Lantern Panel at WonderCon 2011Star of the upcoming Green Lantern film Ryan Reynolds said he was pretty damn impressed with the footage showed off at this year’s WonderCon after being in a skin tight blue suit that didn’t breath well in Louisiana. [For details on that footage, read: WonderCon 2011: Ryan Reynolds Shows Off New ‘Green Lantern’ Footage and Watch Now: 4 Minutes Of New ‘Green Lantern’ Footage]

It was a fun panel filled with lots of banter between Reynolds and the audience. He joked with the fans about reading Green Lantern comics for inspiration, saying if he hadn’t at this point the fans would have run him out of the convention center in an angry mob — and then seemed disappointed that the crowd was slow to chant the Green Lantern oath with him, stopping midway through to reveal that the “front row just bombed it.”

“I was going to come out here and tell everyone I was cast a the lead in a new Flash movie since it’s April Fools Day,” Reynolds said, adding that he’d likely “be systematically murdered” if he played another super-character. And since he wouldn’t be playing Barry Allen, he suggested the role for Bradley Cooper, which got a mixed reaction from the crowd.

Geeks of Doom Invades WonderCon 2011

Ryan Reynolds At WonderconRyan Reynolds, star of the upcoming film Green Lantern based on the DC Comics character, was on hand at WonderCon 2011 to answer questions from fans and talk a little bit about some new footage from the movie.

Most of what was shown was not part of the previously released trailers and the footage is not yet online, so here’s a description of the extended clip.

The footage starts out with Sinestro conversing with Abin Sur when a yellow beast, the deadly Parallax, begins attacking him, a.k.a kicking his ass. When Abin Sur is wounded, he escapes back to his spacecraft en route to Earth.

“Head for the nearest planet and begging the selection process,” Abin Sur says, then immediately cuts to a shot of his glowing blue spacecraft in front of a exasperated Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who sees Abin Sur’s oozing purple wounds and pulls him from the spacecraft.
